February 29, 1933: Hitler is appointed as Chancellor

3. Genocide Factors Famine was predicted back in 1930
No one did anything to prevent it
Debate that it was also due to changes implemented by Soviet industrialization
Gold Blockade
Western countries refused to accept gold from the Soviets

4. Genocide Factors Collectivization Policy made by Stalin in 1928-1940
Consolidated individual land and labor into collective farms
Stalin believed that this would increase farm productivity

5. What is Holodomor?
Holodomor was an “artificial famine” imposed by Stalin’s regime
It was also the premeditated murder of the Ukrainian people
Aside from starvation, many Ukrainian cultural, religious, and intellectual leaders were deported/executed

Stalin
Forced farmers to abide by his policy of collectivization
Introduces class warfare to reduce resistance to his policy
Confiscated Ukrainian land, livestock, and other property
Shipped 1.5 million Ukrainians to remote areas

About 6-7 million were accounted dead
Estimated that million died, but is debated as an exaggeration
The most affected area was Dripropetrovsk Oblast (District)
Suffered from malaria and typhus on top of starvation
The 2nd and 3rd worse oblasts were Odessa and Kiev
Kiev had the highest starvation reports in Mid-March

Classification was well established in Soviet Russia even before the Red Army’s coup d’etat
The Ukrainians were easy targets since they considered themselves separate from the Soviets
Resistors were classified as “kulak”
Ukrainians were deemed as traitors by the Soviets

Stalin had organized Holodomor by continuously the grain production quota
Stalin also set up blockades on the Ukrainian/Polish border to prevent food from going into Ukraine
To prepare for Holodomor, anyone considered a threat was either deported or executed

Stalin exterminated the Ukrainians merely by starving them to death
During Holodomor, denial was prominent
Few foreign journalists were allowed in the Soviet Union
Many countries, including Russia, don’t recognize Holodomor as a genocide

11. World’s Reaction to Holodomor
The US Senate decides to pass H.O.R.’s resolution No. 562
This authorized the Ukrainian government to erect a memorial to commemorate the victims
