Hermes webmail facility CUDN for internet access MCS Desktop Services Wide range of services The most likely things you will use initially will be the MCS Desktop machines and your web based – often just called Hermes (which is named after the server that the is stored on). MCS Desktop machines are situated across the university and are all administered centrally by the UIS. They provide a comprehensive range of software. When you log on to any MCS Desktop machine it will open up with your settings, stored centrally on a server, and will give you access to your files and from anywhere within the University. You can log onto these machines with the first part of your address, sometimes called your CRSid, and the password you will have already collected. Don’t worry if you have not gone through this step yet, we will be in the basement of the library to help. There is a wide range of services so please come to see us if you have any special requests. There is no storage of your files on these machines so remember to store your data on a USB memory stick. On the subject of files, please do make sure to make regular backups of your files. It is important to not just click ‘save’ but to rename your files periodically, with a version number and/or date. This will help greatly if you do have problems since you will always then be able to ‘roll back’ to a time when you knew the file was good. You may have to recreate your recent data but you will not have lost all – very important when it gets to dissertation time! Induction for Lucy Cavendish College IT Services 5

IT Services - Internet Connection
All rooms are fitted with Ethernet data socket All buildings have WiFi Student computers must have completed security checks, enabled all software auto-update, installed valid anti-virus software (free from UCS). Internet Connection Workshop Compliance: College and University Monitoring Security and Virus protection Disconnection All rooms on Campus have a network connection giving you 24 hour access to the internet. You will need an Ethernet network cable. They are available in the lodge for a small charge. If you don’t have a PC there is a limited number of loan machines available from the IT department, again for a small fee. If you are comfortable using and configuring computers then you can use the IT checklist procedure to get connected to the Lucy Cavendish student network. Less comfortable students can come along to the Induction Workshops and we will be happy to go through the checklist with you. The IT checklist procedure must be completed in order to access the student network. There are very good reasons for the IT checklist procedure. Since the computers will be connected on a network it is very important that measures are taken to try to keep the network secure. Viruses not only infect other machines but also drastically slow your machines down. Incidentally, contrary to popular belief, Macs are not immune and security software is also required on those. Your activity on the Internet will not be monitored but abuse, not necessarily your fault, will be identified and you will be contacted if this occurs. It may be that you have a small virus on your machine that is sending out SPAM as part of a larger collective, for example. We will be able to spot items like this and can quickly inform you so that you can remove them. So, please complete IT checklist procedure , sooner rather than later, and do come to see us if you struggle. Induction for Lucy Cavendish College IT Services 13
