5 Renewable heat sources Geothermal energy - Heat pumps Evaporator, compressor, condenser, reducing valve Evaporator, compressor, condenser, reducing valve Evaporator Evaporator air, water, soil air, water, soil Condensator Condensator low temperature heating, hot water, swimming pool low temperature heating, hot water, swimming pool Efficiency - Efficiency - Output/Input= avg.2,4 Output/Input= avg.2,4 http://www.geoexchange.org/frames/case_studies.htm Energy of environment Utilisation: heating, hot water Compressor Medium vapour Compressed hot vapour Liquid medium Cooled medium Evaporator Condenser Reducing valve

6 Heat pumps - alternatives of heat sources

7 Combined heat and power generation (CHP) gas engine with el.power generator gas engine with el.power generator cooling of the engine is the heat source cooling of the engine is the heat source output e.g. 42 kW heat, 25 kW electric output e.g. 42 kW heat, 25 kW electric

8 Fuel Cells In principle, a fuel cell operates like a battery. Unlike a battery, a fuel cell does not run down or require recharging. It will produce energy in the form of electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied. A fuel cell consists of two electrodes sandwiched around an electrolyte. Oxygen passes over one electrode and hydrogen over the other, generating electricity, water and heat. http://www.esru.strath.ac.uk/E andE/Web_sites/00- 01/fuel_cells/ http://www.esru.strath.ac.uk/E andE/Web_sites/00- 01/fuel_cells/
