IPEDS Focus Session 2: Derived Variables in IPEDS SHEEO/NCES Network Conference & IPEDS Workshop 3/31/04 John Milam HigherEd.org, Inc.
2
Project Description NCES project to add value to IPEDS by creating new derived & calculated variables Derived variables will make it quicker for users to get the data they need without lots of calculations; will be more than subtotals Derived variables address policy questions Parallel to NPEC Data Feedback project Parallel to improvements to PAS Derived variables are required for 2 new tools - IPEDS DAS & Peer Tool for Novices
3
Reviewed relevant literature to identify variables that have been used to address policy issues in postsecondary education Reviewed IPEDS surveys Prepared working list of variables Obtained preliminary review & comments from NCES & the IR & association communities Held IPEDS Technical Review Panel 2/4-5/04 to identify issues & revise list Project activities
4
Reviewed imputation & perturbation issues NCES upgraded PAS navigation/subtotals NCES review of new variables Preparing report of recommendations Will post proposal on IPEDS website with period for commentary & feedback Will integrate comments w/ NCES decisions Will create definitions & SQL Will integrate variables into applications Project activities – cont.
5
Derived variables must suit the tools All will be available in the PAS/DCT Subset in the Peer Tool for Novices Subset in the IPEDS DAS When is a calculation so onerous it needs to be created as a new variable? Need variables to produce ED Tab tables w/ the IPEDS DAS Some assumptions & questions
6
Handling single-record vs multi-record data; hierarchical or qualifying When is a derived variable a variable vs. a value label? When to use data vs. percentages? What will the tools provide automatically? Display of means, counts, & sums Some assumptions & questions – cont.
7
Subtotals for qualifying variables & data whenever possible Student FTE by level (new method) Total full-time faculty FTE for non-medical & non-medical (new method) New total with definitions for “core revenues” & “core expenses” Core revenues (total & by source) as a % of core revenues Net tuition & fees revenue as a % of core revenues Net tuition & fees revenue per FTE student Expenses by type as a % of core expenses Core expenses (total & by type) per FTE student (NPEC) Equity Ratio (Net Assets divided by Total Assets) Average undergraduate charges by residency Average total price of attendance (new method) Admissions ratios/yield by gender TRP Recommendations
8
Combinations of totals for tuition & fees, room & board, books & supplies, & other expenses by residency and financial aid dependency status Grants (by type) as a % of average total price of attendance Loans as a % of average total price of attendance Dorm capacity as percent of total full-time enrollment w/ grad & first prof Fall total enrollment by adult age (25-64) by status & level Fall undergraduate enrollment % as <18, 18-24, 25-64, 65+ Average 9-month equated salary, total & by rank Average 9-month equated total compensation, total & by rank Total Fringe Benefits as a % of Total Expenses Total Salaries + Fringe Benefits as a % of Total Expenses Total Salaries as a % of Total Expenses TRP Recommendations -2

Admissions Admitted as % of applied Students enrolled as % of admitted Completions demographics Ethnicity by undergraduate completions as % of undergraduate completions Enrollment Full-time Fall enrollment Part-time Fall enrollment Total Fall enrollment Total FTE enrollment Unduplicated headcount Enrollment demographics Ethnicity by undergraduate students as % of undergraduates NPEC variables for Novices tool
