3  Four days and\ three nights in Northern Minnesota connecting with the great outdoors.  One night in a lodge, two nights winter camping in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. (BWCAW)

4 Friday Feb 20 th - Bring packed sled to BHS at 7:00 am -Departure BHS at 2:50 pm -Trek booklet is your passport on the bus -Dinner Stop in Two Harbors -Bait stop in Grand Marais -Overnight Stay at Wilderness Canoe Base Lodge Saturday: Breakfast at Lodge, then hike into BWCAW Sunday: Group planned activities: (Hike, fish, explore, chill) Monday: Feb. 23 -Break camp and hike out -Brunch stop and swim in Grand Marais -Arrival back at Blaine around 7-8 PM

6 Clothing: (NO COTTON!!!!) -Layering (Poly, Fleece/wool, Wind Proof) (Warm Jacket) -Hats/Gloves/Mittens/Leather Camp Gloves -Nylon around the camp fire BAD. (Don’t melt your gear) -Boots with removable liner: *Ideally 2 pairs of boots: 1 for walking, 1 for camp. (EXPECT SLUSH!!!!!) -Socks (at least 2 pair/day) Sleeping: - 2 Sleeping Mats / ground pads. - 2 Sleeping Bags (1 winter, 1 summer) - Facemask

7 Cooking/camping: - Water Bottles (2) Big Mouth - White gas stove, fuel, pots and pans. - Toiletries - Tent (whether in quinzhees or not) Miscellaneous: - Pulk (toboggan for carrying equipment) - Sunglasses/Sunscreen - Fishing gear - Duffle bag with swim suit - Flashlight (head lamp)

8 -One-pot recipes: (Seal a meal, or freeze dried) -Food will FREEZE -High calorie content -Snacks: (GORP), Jerky, Candy bars -Constant supplies of purified drinking water “Eat because you need calories, drink because you need to be hydrated”

10 - Sleep is essential… -2 Mats prevent conductive heat loss -2 Sleeping bags prevents convective heat loss -Sleep clothing (dry socks, facemask or hat) -Tents vs. Quinzhee (most campers use tents)

12 -Leave no trace… only footprints -Wilderness Rules: -group size (9) -impact -Firewood: dead/down/distant/dry -set-back distances -Your generation represents a group that is growing increasingly disjointed from the outdoor world… Through this experience we hope to create “stewards” of the environment by seeing first-hand the importance of the “wise use of resources”.

13 Lake Trout: -active during winter -must have a trout stamp -depths from 40-100 feet Walleyes: -less active late winter -depths from 10-40 feet General Equipment: -ice rods and jigging spoon equipment -scoops -flashers (lake trout are often suspended near bait schools)

17 -Coach Bus ( maybe 2 ??) -Lodging at Wilderness Canoe Base -Breakfast at WCB -Swimming Pool Rental -U-Haul Truck Rental -Gas for U-Haul & chaperone drivers -Snow shoes -Gear for those in need -Replacement cost for damaged gear -Two way radio communication $ batteries

18  Sleeping Bag ($100)  Sleeping Mat ($25-80)  Clothing: Boots w/ liners, hats, mittens, snow pants.  Food ($20)  Snacks ($20)  Miscellaneous We do have equipment, but use ODA’s as a last resort… borrow some equipment!

21 Please reference the trek manual often, there is very valuable checklists and information. Look at the words of advice from past students… learn from their mistakes (and from their triumphs). Communicate at home… everyone needs to be on the same page. You have to remember that you are part of a very large group… solve your own problems

22 The success of your child relies upon preparation… We will thoroughly cover all of the material in preparation for the trip. Your child will need to apply what they’ve learned in class in order to pack and prepare for this experience. If you pack for Hot, Cold, Wet, Dry, Wind, Sun, and Slush conditions, you’ll be prepared.
