 We sometimes think that being a non-Christian keeps us “free” from God’s laws, so we decide to “wait.”  The truth is that everybody who is morally responsible is already under God’s laws - Rom. 1:18- 2:16, esp. 2:12-13

 No one is lost due to some “technicality” – like failure to be baptized  Only living in Jesus frees us from slavery to our own destructive habits - Jn. 8:31-32; Rom. 6:8-23

 We sometimes think that being a non- Christian keeps us “free” from feeling guilty over our imperfections  Our own conscience still accuses us of failure when we don’t live up to our own expectations – whether or not we are Christian - Rom. 2:14-15; 1 Tim. 4:1-5, esp. 4:2; Eph. 4:17-19

 Each of us can have freedom from guilt only when we know that some solution has been provided to balance our failures – and only the blood of Jesus promised when we repent and live faithfully can do this - Heb. 9:11- 14; 9:24-28; 1 Pet. 3:21; 1 Jn. 1:5- 2:2; Jas 5:15b-16; Jude 24-25

 We sometimes think that being a non- Christian keeps us “free” from being self-righteous or hypocritical like people we know who call themselves Christians

 The truth is that self-righteous hypocrisy is present all around us outside the church - Rom. 1:18-32, esp. 1:18, 21-22, 28; 1:32; 10:1-3; 1 Pet. 2:1-2; 1 Tim. 4:1-5, esp. 4:2

 Each of us can be free from hypocrisy only when we give up pretending to be “independent” and free from self- righteousness only when we practice God’s righteousness demonstrated through Jesus - 1 Pet. 1:21-2:3; Rom. 3:21-27

 Each Christian also helps other Christians avoid hypocrisy and self- righteousness when we insist on Christ’s teachings be followed among ourselves - Lk. 17:3-4/Matt. 18:15- 17; Gal. 6:1-2; Cf. Lev. 19:17-18

 We sometimes think that being a non- Christian keeps us “free” from fearing what happens after death.

 The truth is that the certainty of heaven is the only way to be free from anxiety about what will happen after death – if we obey so that we are free from the certainty of eternal punishment - 2 Thess. 1:6-10; Jn. 5:28-29; 2 Cor. 5:9-11

 Each Christian is assured of heaven unless we grow disloyal to God’s rule through Christ - Heb. 9:28; 2 Tim. 4:8-9; Rom. 8:31-39
