Green Day “Whatsername” By: Joe Student

About Green Day Punk rock band. Came together in 1989. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool make up Green Day.

Stanza #1 Metaphor: “I made a point to burn all of the photographs”. This does not literally mean that he is going to burn his memory. But it gets the point through that he is trying to get rid of the memory. Thought I ran into you down on the street Then it turned out to only be a dream I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away and then I took a different path I remember the face but I can't recall the name Now I wonder how whatsername has been Diction: burn and recall. These are significant because the whole song, the artist is trying to get rid of his memory of the dream, and remember it at the same time. Summary: He had a dream about a girl and he is both trying to forget and remember it at the same time. Billie Joe Armstrong

Stanza #2 Summary: The artist is still trying to remember what happened in his dream. Seems that she disappeared without a trace Did she ever marry old what's his face? I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away and then I took a different path I remember the face but I can't recall the name Now I wonder how whatsername has been Figurative Language: “seems that she disappeared without a trace”. She did not literally disappear, he woke up from his dream. Diction: shows that he is still trying to figure out what happened. (burn, recall, the question) Tre Cool

Stanza #3 Remember, whatever It seems like forever ago Remember, whatever It seems like forever ago The regrets are useless In my mind She's in my head I must confess The regrets are useless In my mind She's in my head From so long ago (Go, Go, Go, Go..) And in the darkest night If my memory serves me right I'll never turn back time Forgetting you, but not the time. Summary: The artist is trying to get the girl in his dream out of his head but he cannot regret that she’s on his mind. Mike Dirnt Repetition: The whole first part of this stanza is repetition. It is trying to show that this dream and the girl inside of it keep running right through his head. Metaphor:" If my memory serves me right”. His memory cannot “serve” anything. So this shows that this phrase is a metaphor.

“Whatsername” Thought I ran into you down on the street Then it turned out to only be a dream I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away and then I took a different path I remember the face but I can't recall the name Now I wonder how whatsername has been Seems that she disappeared without a trace Did she ever marry old what's his face? I made a point to burn all of the photographs She went away and then I took a different path I remember the face but I can't recall the name Now I wonder how whatsername has been Remember, whatever It seems like forever ago Remember, whatever It seems like forever ago The regrets are useless In my mind She's in my head I must confess The regrets are useless In my mind She's in my head From so long ago (Go, Go, Go, Go..) And in the darkest night If my memory serves me right I'll never turn back time Forgetting you, but not the time. My Thought: This song does not mean too much to me. Although, I was able to put it into my own words. At first, the artist has a dream about a girl. Then, he wakes up. He cannot remember anything that happened except for the face of the girl. Through the whole song, he’s trying to remember what happened, then he tries to forget about it. In the end, he wants to remember what happened, but not the girl.
