CAIMANs Cruise and passenger ship Air quality Impact Mitigation ActioNs paving the way towards a joint policy response on the air pollution impact due to the tourist sector of cruise and passenger ships in the MED basin

CAIMANs objectives:  To provide high quality information of the air quality impact of maritime tourism traffic in harbour cities;  To answer the concern of harbour city communities on health risk due to plumes emitted by cruise and passenger ships;  To propose mitigation actions;  To identify critical points and possible solutions in the whole Mediterranean area;  To identify gaps to be addressed at transnational level

Air dispersion modelling/CO 2 emission estimation current situation and development/mitigation scenarios in Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Venice, Thessaloniki Air dispersion modelling/CO 2 emission estimation current situation and development/mitigation scenarios in Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Venice, Thessaloniki Involvement of Southern Mediterranean ports in identification of critical points and perspectives for mitigation actions on air quality impact of cruise and passenger ships Involvement of Southern Mediterranean ports in identification of critical points and perspectives for mitigation actions on air quality impact of cruise and passenger ships Identification of critical end points to establish a common transnational policy to mitigate cruise and passenger ship air quality impact in the MED basin Identification of critical end points to establish a common transnational policy to mitigate cruise and passenger ship air quality impact in the MED basin CAIMANs’ technical steps

The project area of Barcelona Cruise terminals -7 international passenger terminals -Leader in security and logistics for cruise traffic -Wide range of enterprises specialized in the sector -Important private inversions in specialized terminals -MEDICRUISE member: Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports

The project area of Marseilles 5 NO 2 concentrations during February month from 2 ships (RoPax) Impact of 2 RoPax Ships in the East Harbour: high resolution dispersion modelling of plumes [ADMS] ~ 40 km East Harbour West Harbour  East basin: mainly Passenger and cruise activities  West basin: mainly container and liquid bulk activities Localisation of the simulation scenarii

LNG scenario for passenger ships in Marseilles 6 PM 2.5 NO 2  Maximal reduction for PM 2.5 = - 8% Difference in pollutant concentrations between 2025 reference scenario and 2025 LNG scenario  Maximal reduction for NO 2 = -30%

Medieval town A touristic harbour in the heart of the city http://www.labfisa.ge.infn.it The project area of Genoa

Impact of Cruise Ships hotelling at the Marittima Terminal and manouvering in Giudecca Channel Maximum hourly concentrations of SO 2 (µg/m 3 ) Mid September – Mid October 2013 [CALPUFF] The project area of Venice

The Blue Flag2 case in Venice Voluntary Agreement of Cruise Companies on using fuels with 0.1% sulphur content in maneuvering phase 9

o A European port and a natural gateway for the economic activities of the inland markets beyond Greece. o Serving the growing needs of countries for the import and export of raw material, consumer products and capital equipment. o Vital element of the country's economy AND Substantial role in the effort of Northern Greece and Thessaloniki to be established as the economic centre of the Eastern Mediterranean. o Privileged position being located at the crossroad of different transportation networks. http://www.thpa.gr/en/ The project area of Thessaloniki
