2 “WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING” Don’t have to repent? Don’t have to believe? FAITH: a SUPERNATURAL GIFT or a RATIONAL CHOICE? Certainly in one sense, faith is a gift (Mark 9:24), repentance is a gift (Acts 11:18) By “supernatural,” we mean such that man does nothing, has no choice, no volition in the matter... But it is claimed that faith is a gift in such a way as to preclude man from having to do anything...

3 “WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING” Don’t have to repent? Don’t have to believe? FAITH: a SUPERNATURAL GIFT or a RATIONAL CHOICE? Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. 4 “WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING” Don’t have to repent? Don’t have to believe? FAITH: a SUPERNATURAL GIFT or a RATIONAL CHOICE? John 10:37-38 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” John 20:30-31 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

5 “WE DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING” Don’t have to repent? Don’t have to believe? Acts 16:30-31 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” PERFECT OCCASION TO FIND THE ANSWER, “NOTHING!” - But... And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 2:37-38 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” WHY DIDN’T PETER SAY, “NOTHING”? And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

6 IF FAITH WERE A GIFT… Why blame man for lack of faith? Mt. 14:31 Mt. 17:19f Heb. 3:12-4:2 Heb. 11:6 Why not give faith to all? Why not give faith to all? 2 Pt. 3:9
