Substance Abuse We are starting a new unit on Substance abuse sorry I cannot be here today. Please take notes on the slides

Watch out!!!!!!!!! If you are at a party watch your cup the whole time or use another kind of container so no one can slip anything into your drink!! Roofies and other things are often slipped into unattended drinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is substance abuse?? Substances=alcohol and drugs Abuse=to use in excess It is addiction or overuse of substance When someone is an alcoholic for instance we might say they have a substance abuse problem. Fancy way of saying drug/alcohol addiction or problem.

Words you need to know how to spell correctly for the quiz…. Marijuana Alcohol Alcoholism

Why people smoke and why they SHOULDN’T: They think it’s cool Peer pressured into it Addicted Think it keeps them skinny Celebrities and role models do it It “chills” them out It really affects their lungs Makes them smell Yellow teeth Cough Spend a LOT of money Second hand smoke affects others Can’t play sports or workout as well Can you think of any other reasons for each column? That is your homework to think of more for each category

They think it’s cool Peer pressure Celebrities make it look cool They like the feeling Curious Addicted Have problems and think drinking will help their problems Taste good to them It’s horrible for your liver When you are young it’s worst for your body than when you are of age to drink (21 years old or over) You do things you will regret later Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT so it really brings you down! Problems won’t go away You could get in an accident if you drink and drive and hurts not only yourself but others

They have cancer and during chemo marijuana actually helps them to feel better They think it’s cool They are peer pressured They are curious They like the high feeling Gives you the “munchies” Makes them not have any motivation anymore (like school work for instance) Kills brain cells Other names for marijuana…pot, joint, weed, mary jane.

WHERE DO PRESSURES COME FROM??? The media (celebrities etc) – even though you don’t realize it those messages on TV and movies sneak into your brain Friends and Peers- maybe the biggest pressure Come up with two more places the pressures to drink or not drink can come from Now that we know where the pressures come from we can learn to say no to them………

How to resist the pressures…. 5 ways: 1. Avoid the situation- like don’t go to the party if you know alcohol will be there 2. Say “NO”- your friends SHOULD respect that 3. Suggest an alternative “Let’s go to the mall instead” 4. Walk away or leave the situation 5. Stand up and speak up! “I don’t want that drink and you know you shouldn’t drink it either it’s bad for you liver…”

Other ways to say no and stay cool: I’m allergic My (aunt, uncle, brother) is an alcoholic and after seeing them go to rehab and go through all that I just don’t want to go down that path myself I have a game tomorrow My mom would kill me I am the designated driver Make a joke out of it. If you can’t be serious and say no then be funny about it!!!!

Ms.B’s tricks: Water bottle trick Apple juice trick Pour it down the drain trick (in the bathroom) Say you are already drunk Just act drunk-no one will know you aren’t Trip and spill the beer!! Can you think of any others?

Watch out!!!!!!!!! If you are at a party watch your cup the whole time or use another kind of container so no one can slip anything into your drink!! Roofies and other things are often slipped into unattended drinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alcohol Terms: Alcoholism -addiction to alcohol. Must go to rehab.Alcoholism is called a FAMILY disease because it affects everyone and does run in families BAC- Blood Alcohol Content/Concentration This is how much alcohol is in your blood stream the legal limit is.08 After that you are considered DRUNK! Sober- No drinking

More alcohol terms you need to know:  Breathalyzer- you blow into this thing cops give you to see if you are drunk.  DWI- When you are pulled over and have been drinking after they give you a breathalyzer and you fail it you get a DWI (driving while intoxicated) and your name goes in the paper, you pay a fine and have your license taken away.
