2 The Veridian Group, Inc.2 Young Novice Drivers n We’ve been studying this issue for a long time n Must distinguish novice drivers from young novice drivers

3 The Veridian Group, Inc.3 Young Novice Drivers Have: n Excellent Reflexes n Good hand-eye coordination n Rapid perception-reaction time n Ability to divide and share attention n Wide range of body strength and motion n Excellent peripheral and night vision, contrast sensitivity

4 The Veridian Group, Inc.4 These are essentially the same factors that are important for safe driving, but compromised in the elderly and known to contribute to their elevated crash rate

5 The Veridian Group, Inc.5 Young novice drivers also have: n An inflated assessment of their abilities n A high propensity to take risks n Greater exposure to potential crash situations n A lack of driving experience, which leads to n Unrefined perceptual and cognitive skills critical for safe driving

6 The Veridian Group, Inc.6 We Can See these Differences in Crash Types and Consequences n Young novice drivers have high-speed, single vehicle, run-off-road crashes n Older drivers have low-speed, two- vehicle, intersection, angled crashes n Older drivers have high fatality rates because they are physically frail n Young drivers have high fatality rates because they hit things hard

9 The Veridian Group, Inc.9 Training/Testing for These Skills Amenable to Simulation n Traditional driver education not working n Focus has been on vehicle control or “passing the test” n Focus should be on compressing the learning curve for critical perceptual and cognitive skills n This is precisely where simulation is at its best

17 The Veridian Group, Inc.17 Challenges, and “Gold Standards” n Challenges are at the heart of our simulation exercises n We have a tendency to seek the “holy grail” n Subject matter experts can tell us what is needed n We should be coming together to harmonize these events across sites
