2. TUESDAY: BELL RINGER, AD “MUST HAVES”  In your ISN, list five “must haves” for accomplishing the American Dream, as you have thus far defined it.  1.  2.  3.  4.  5.  Be sure to title and put in t.o.c.!!!

3. ANTICIPATION GUIDE Read over the statements on your handout. Mark whether you agree/disagree/etc… (opposed to the prevalence concept). Be prepared to move about the room and discuss your position.

4. THURSDAY: BELL RINGER  In your ISN, define these five words (and include PART OF SPEECH!!!): 1. contempt 2. derision 3. scornful 4. to impoverish 5. aftermath  Be sure to title and put in t.o.c.!!!

5. FRIDAY BELL RINGER  Choose any three words from yesterday’s list and create a sentence for them. Be sure to use context clues to indicate you understand the word’s meaning. Be sure that you also use it correctly in terms of the right part of speech. I will check these to be sure you are getting the hang of vocab before moving on to our class activity!

6. DEFINE YOUR AMERICAN DREAM Following the handout’s prompts, decide on what the AD is and is not. Record your thoughts on the sheet (indecently – you have about 20 minutes). As a class, we will discuss and create our own definition. I will collect these sheets and provide a formative grade for you in Pinnacle!

7. MONDAY BELL RINGER: INVITATION TO WRITE: After reading “How the White Man Came”, journal in your notebook any thoughts, feeling, reactions that you may have. This invitation to write is not a “controlled” piece of writing – create your own concept and go with it. You can write a story, a reaction, a poem, a thought - anything that comes to mind… Here is your invitation… please attend!!!

8. COMPARING TWO TEXTS: After reading about the arrival of the “white man” from the Indian’s perspective, we will read two separate pieces intended to provide similar rights to two different cultures. After reading each, we will read a third party analysis of their similarities/differences. From this activity, we will make a sort of Venn Diagram which will then be counted as a formative grade!

10. Students will independently read “ The Earth on Turtle’s Back” in the Prentice Hall book. We will discuss the selection after pre-reading, leisure reading, and close reading. Students will then, individually, review the questions and choose ONE specific number to answer and turn in for a formative GRADE. The “catch” – the answer must be in ACE format !!!

11. FRIDAY BELL RINGER CHOOSE ANY TWO WORDS FROM YOUR LIST AND WRITE A SENTENCE FOR EACH, INDICTAING YOU UNDERSTAND EACH WORDS MEANING. BE SURE TO USE THE WORD IN ITS PROPER PART OF SPEECH. VOCAB SUMMATIVE NEXT WEDNESDAY ON 10 WORDS!

12. Navajo Legend – “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” READ: In Prentice Hall books, turn to page 19. QUESTION: What other stories can you think of that have animals caring for humans? DO: After reading, make a list of landmarks in your own geographical region/area (lakes, rivers, forests, etc.) WRITE: Choose one landmark and write a short “myth” about how this natural feature was created (turn in to bin for formative grade!)

Directions: Include a thesis statement that draws on information from what you have read. Include support from at least three pieces of text we have covered (CITE THEM!).
