Taller de Herbar Alberto González Talaván Coordination Unit of the Spanish GBIF Node http://www.gbif.es/ First European Workshop on Animal Sound Research and Libraries Madrid, 28 th September 2006 Sala de Juntas Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (CSIC) and the Animal Sound Collections The Global Biodiversity Information Facility

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections What is GBIF? First of all…

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF Make the world’s biodiversity data freely and universally available via the Internet Share primary scientific biodiversity data to benefit science and society. Megascience international endeavor to:

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF GBIF members are: 1. Countries - 57 a. Voting participants – 26 b. Associate participants – 31 2. Associations - 35 …and partners

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF GBIF principles: 1.GBIF is shared and distributed: no huge central database exists. Providers always maintain control over their data. 2.Global in scale, but implemented nationally and regionally. 3.Be accessible by individuals anywhere in the world, while being primary funded by those with the greatest financial capabilities. 4.Promotes standards and software tools designed to facilitate their adaptation into multiple languages, character sets and computer encodings. All technologies developed by GBIF must be “open-source” and freely distributed. 5.Serve to disseminate technological capacity by drawing on and making widely available scientific and technical information. 6.Make biodiversity data universally available, while fully acknowledging the contribution made by those gathering and furnishing these data.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF Data repatriation biodiversity hotspot holder of large amounts of biodiversity data

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF GBIF domain: The types of data that GBIF provide are unique; there is no duplication of any existing effort in such scale. The return on the investments made in the other areas will be enhanced by the data and interoperability provided by GBIF.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF GBIF network:

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF GBIF’s work programmes: DADI: Data Access and Data Interoperability. DIGIT: Digitisation of Natural History Collections. ECAT: Electronic Catalog of Names of Known Organisms. SpeciesBanks: Taxa-level information. DILIB: Digital Biodiversity Literature Resources OCB: Outreach and Capacity Building

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 1.- About GBIF Achievements so far: GBIF prototype data portal serving more than 100 thousand records from 813 different collections. Capacity Building: Periodical international training sessions organized by GBIF Secretariat in partnership with leading scientific initiatives. National nodes also organize frequent training activities. Mentoring programs to foster cooperation between institutions and countries. Tools and Technologies developed to support GBIF decentralized structure, including “Demo Projects” funding to encourage and support innovative ideas. Active programme of data repatriation.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections What about Sound Collections? But…

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 2.- Zoological Sound Collections Zoological Sound collections, as any other natural history collection, host valuable information that can be put into use in countless ways once digitized and appropriately published. The are some institutions whose sound collections are already sharing data through the GBIF Network, such as the Spanish National Museum on Natural Sciences (CSIC). Amphibia collection Birds collection Insecta collection Mammalia collection Reptilia collection

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections However, the only data provided about this items are those typically associated to collection specimens: Taxonomic information Collection site / geographic information Collection time information Who collected and Identified the item But sound recordings, when in digital format, have much more information to offer. 2.- Zoological Sound Collections

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections As in most multimedia objects, collecting and storing METADATA is important. Three kinds of metadata have been identified in natural recordings: 2.- Zoological Sound Collections Acquisition system metadata (semi)-automatic Content metadata Expert needed. Scientific information Curatorial metadata Location and IPR information All this information may/must be served together with the recording.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections There are forums where these issues and similar ones could be tackled: 2.- Zoological Sound Collections The Taxonomic Databases Working Group (TDWG) is a non-profit international association, formed to establish international collaboration among biological databases. To achieve its goals: develops, adopts and promotes standards and guidelines for the recording and exchange of data about organisms promotes their use through the most appropriate and effective means acts as a forum for discussion through holding meetings and through publication such as a newsletter http://www.tdwg.org/

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections Some advances have been made in the challenge of sharing multimedia data in the field of IMAGES. The experience of these working groups may be of use for the animal sound collections community: 2.- Zoological Sound Collections A subgroup of the TDWG is working in the development of standards in taxonomic-grade images: http://wiki.cs.umb.edu/twiki/bin/view/TDWGImage

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections One of the tangible results of the ENBI network WP6 was a “Digital Imaging of Biological Type Specimens” manual of Best Practices. The information about: 2.- Zoological Sound Collections This book is available electronically. Find the link at: http://www.gbif.es/imagenes_in.php 1.Metadata standards and practices (p. 19-35) 2.Image file management (p. 41-56) …can be easily translated into the field of sound recordings.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections What can be done NOW? So…

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections GBIF stands as a good opportunity for animal sound collections to standardize their primary data, and to share it through a common interface. 3.- Sound Collections and GBIF at Present Those interested in the idea, should set up a data server compatible with GBIF: a DIGIR server or an ABCD server. Once the data is connected to the GBIF network, it is available from the GBIF data portal, and any other national data portal the provider decides to be connected to.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections But, there is also the opportunity to set up a custom data portal for animal sound collections, adding additional value not included in any other portals: 3.- Sound Collections and GBIF at Present 1.The digital data itself. 2.Relevant metadata for each record. 3. Additional services decided by the providers A custom portal adds visibility and stands as a information reference for those looking for information related to animal sound recordings of scientific grade.

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections At present, a custom portal could be installed in the same way Spanish Node does for Spanish data providers: 3.- Sound Collections and GBIF at Present

Taller de Herbar GBIF España, 2006GBIF and the Animal Sound Collections 3.- Sound Collections and GBIF at Present GBIF’s DADI Programme have works in progress to develop a new custom portal, according to the experience gathered in the 5 first years of GBIF life. This portal will be delivered as a customizable package that can be connected to GBIF providers, and include any additional information the administrator find useful. This package should be available in 2007, as it is one of GBIF priorities to offer this technology to the nodes and data providers.
