3 Recently inspected by the newly formed Skills Funding Agency, Blackpool and the Fylde College received a grading of; Outstanding ! This is the Highest grade in the scale. Have achieved the Highest grade in each of the last four such inspections. 3 The story so far !

4 4 Introduction Blackpool and the Fylde College has a good reputation for Health & Safety amongst our peers. Good health and safety is a product of good teamwork between the members of the College community. Although it’s a question of teamwork, staff must take the lead, leading by example.

8 8 Accidents and ill health Definitions ACCIDENT: An unplanned, uncontrolled event that may cause injury, damage or other form of loss. NEAR MISS: An unplanned, uncontrolled event that whilst not causing injury to anyone, has the potential to cause injury and/or damage to plant or equipment. OCCUPATIONAL ILLNESS: Health problems associated with work.

10 10 Duties Our Duties to You Duty of Care Duty to provide, as far as in reasonably practicable, a safe & healthy working environment Information, training & supervision Safe machinery & equipment to use Safe access & egress ( including in an emergency and for the DDA ) Your Duties to Us Take care of yourself and others Co-operate with Employers or others who may have legal responsibilities to enable them to comply with any duties & requirements placed upon them

11 11 But how do I do that? Comply with College/School of Support Service procedures Ensure Risk assessments have been carried out for the activities you are involved with, or carry them out after training Complete necessary documentation when required to

14 14 College Fire Procedures FIRE ACTION 1.Operate the NEAREST FIRE ALARM 2.REPORT LOCATION of Fire to Member of Staff 3.LEAVE BUILDING by the NEAREST Indicated Exit 4.REPORT to ASSEMBLY POINT 5.Persons with LIMITED MOBILITY Move HORIZONTALLY AWAY FROM FIRE Initially, to marked REFUGE (REST) POINTS (IN STAIRWAYS) before continuing to evacuate the building and after the main body of Evacuees have passed STAFF 1. Ensure ROOM IS CLEAR 2. TURN OFF SERVICES, if possible and safe to do so 3. Close but don’t lock room door 4. ACCOUNT for their STUDENTS at the ASSEMBLY POINT 5. REPORT to Head of School/Department HOS/SERVICE 1.REPORT status to Fire Marshal/ Incident Controller/Senior Fire Officer at the scene

16 16 College First Aider Blackpool and the Fylde College always has vacancies for COLLEGE FIRST AIDERS Initial 3 day course, + 3 yearly, 2 day refresher course - Free to individual Honorarium for being on College approved list Covered by College Insurance when administering First Aid on College property Benefits R E C R U I T M E N T C A M P A I G N

17 17 Accident Reporting Recorded in School /Departmental accident book Health, Safety & Environmental Support Office (HSESO), MUST be informed by telephone on the same day, AND via a Correctly completed College Report Form, within 2 days if serious, or 3 days if not If Serious: HSESO informs HSE and LSC via relevant forms
