What is Light? Light is like sound. We can't observe a piece of light. Both light and sound are means of transferring energy between points. Scientists believe light travels in straight lines. However this is only true when light stays in the same path with the same substance all the way.

Concave Mirror A concave mirror is a mirror that curves in on the shiny side. The image it produces is enlarged right side up images, or an upside down Image. The farther you get from a concave mirror the smaller you get. You will still remain upside down.

Convex Mirror A convex mirror is a mirror that curves out on the shiny side. The image it produces is upright, life sized, and reversed Convex mirrors are used in cars and as security systems in stores.

Polarization Polarization is the process of allowing light vibrations to pass through in only one direction Polarized sunglasses use polarizing material to help you see better on a sunny day. The sunglasses block glare and all kinds of light that can vibrate sideways.

Translucent Translucent objects let only some light through so objects on the other side appear blurry They are used in shower doors because they allow light in but with privacy The light may bounce in all directions

Opaque Opaque objects completely block light from passing through. Objects like teddy bears, books, computers, or I pads. Many people think empty space is opaque to light, but the starry nigh shows light can travel through empty space.

Transparent Transparent objects allow light to pass through with almost no disturbance. These objects may not color the light but you can see objects clearly. Fish bowl is an example of an transparent object.

What happens when light passes through matter? Sometimes when light passes through matter almost all the light gets through. Sometimes only some light gets through In other cases no light gets through

What is a prism ? A prism is a cut piece of clear glass, with two opposite sides in the shape of a triangle or other geometric shape. Prisms effect light because they make rainbows. The rainbow colors you see after a storm acts both as prisms and mirrors. The rain drops bend rays of sunlight at different angles, which causes the colors to spread out. The various colors reflect off the the back of the drops into your eye.

Electromagnetic Spectrum An electromagnetic spectrum shows all the wavelengths of visible and invisible light in order, from short to long. Instruments such as spectroscopes detect light we can't see.
