Why Bother to Organize? Save time getting ready. Find items faster. Keep clutter at bay and have more space to use. Avoid over-buying and other unnecessary expenses. Easier to recycle! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Did you know... 20% of the items in your bathroom are used about 80% of the time? Called the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 Rule. Think of all the cabinet space and counter space the other 80% of rarely- used bathroom items occupy! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

The Organizational Process 1. Decide to Get Organized 2. Create a Plan 3. Sort the Space 4. Create Zones 5. Keep it Up Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Decide to Get Organized! Make it a priority! Schedule time in your planner. Enlist help where needed. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Create a Plan What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to change? How do you want it to look or feel? When do you want to start? Where do you want to start? Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Select a Starting Point One drawer, one cabinet, or one shelf at a time. Caution: taking on too much can be overwhelming. Remove items from the space. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Sort your Items Place similar items together. You will be able to see what you have. Do you have more than you thought? Relocate items that don’t belong in your bathroom. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Can you Pare Down? Ask yourself: Do I frequently use it? Is it easy to use? Do I have too many? Do I need both? Donate excess items to a local charity. Recycle recyclable items. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Create Zones A zone is a group of related items. Sample zones: Hair products Linens & towels Make-up Cleaning products Recycling and trash Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Create Zones Designate specific uses for each cabinet shelf, & drawer. “The make-up drawer” “The first aid shelf” Store items near where you use them. Toothpaste, brushes & mouthwash near the sink. Extra toilet paper near the toilet. And, recycle the toilet paper roll! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Use drawer organizers and dividers. Place similar items in the same divider cubby. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Double towel bars can save wall space. Hang twice as many towels in half the space! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Do not over-fill or overcrowd a shelf. Leave space to see and access each item. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Use small bins or baskets to store related items on a shelf or in a drawer. Small shoe boxes or check boxes work too! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Use small shelves to elevate items. Easier to see & access items. Results in less waste! Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Utilize vertical space. Use hooks to hang brushes and other items under your sink. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Why do we save our extra bottles of shampoo and conditioner? Donate bottles you won’t use to a local shelter. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Helpful Organizational Tips Purchase products with recyclable packaging. * Not all plastic packaging is recyclable. Check the #s on the container. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Keep it Up! Put items away when you’re finished using them. Similar to putting milk back in the fridge (& recycling the jug)! Keep at it, change can take time. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

So, what’s one area in your Bathroom you plan to organize in the next week? Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Reduce – Part one Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com Remember the duplicates you found in the bathroom?

Donate these items, unused trial, sample and hotel sized personal hygiene products, and other healthcare items in good shape to Goodwill, Salvation Army or your local Women’s Shelter. (Get a tax deduction!) Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Reduce – Part two Before purchasing new items for the bathroom... Ask yourself... Do I really need it? Is it something I will really use? Can it be recycled or donated to a good cause when I am finished with it? Copyright © 2010 www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Reuse Use items such as plastic jars, check boxes and shoe boxes to organize items in the bathroom. For collecting recyclables such as toilet paper tubes, toothpaste boxes, plastic bags and packaging, use ice cream pails or shoe boxes that will fit conveniently under your sink next to your trash can. 35 Organizing Bathroom Recyclables Place a small “recycling container” near your bathroom trash can. This will remind you to recycle instead of throwing recyclable items in a landfill. When the container is full, empty it into your larger recycling bin. Repeat regularly! Copyright © 2010 www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Where to Recycle Curbside Recycling Programs Drop-off Recycling Centers Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Last – But not least - Hazardous Materials Did you find make-up, or cleaners you no longer use? Check with your County Health Department to locate a Household Hazardous Waste collection in your area. Copyright © 2010. www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com

Medications Did you find prescription drugs you no longer use or that are past the expiration date? This applies to over the counter medications as well. Check with your local law enforcement agency to see if you have a “Dump your Drugs program” in your area. These collections are “No questions asked” programs that protect families and youth from prescription drug abuse. Take to a HHW collection day. Do not flush! Medications contaminate water supplies. If no other alternative, duct tape shut and put in secure garbage. Copyright © 2010 www.OrganizeAndRecycle.com
