6 Lesson 2 How People Pay for Health Services Health Care Expenses Many families have some form of health insurance.health insurance To maintain membership in such a plan, the insured person pays a periodic premium, or fee, for medical coverage. In conventional insurance plans, the insured person pays for doctor visits out of pocket. The insurance company then reimburses a fixed portion of the cost of the visit. A deductible is an amount a member must pay in an out-of- pocket expense before the plan will start reimbursing for health care services.
