6 Family Crests, or Coats of Arms, date to the early Middle Ages because armor was making it difficult to tell people apart. They decided to paint something on their honor to help with this They were important in battle, but also worked kind of like team uniforms in tournaments Over time, shield emblem designs became enduring symbols of their owners, and of their owners’ families

7 It started to become fashionable to have a ‘coat of arms’, so people hired artists to design them They started putting them on tunics, saddle blankets, banners, tapestries, sculptures, architectural features, signs, advertisements, coins, jewelry, and stamps. It became a thing for every one to do, not just soldiers It also helped people recognize each other’s marks when few people could read or write.
