* Reading is a receptive skill - through it we receive information. But the complex process of reading also requires the skill of speaking, so that we can pronounce the words that we read. In this sense, reading is also a productive skill. "Reading" is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them. * When we read, we use our eyes to receive written symbols and we use our brain to convert them into words, sentences and paragraphs that communicate something to us. * Reading can be silent or aloud

The short answer is no. Some native speakers cannot read or write but they speak English fluently. On the other hand, reading is something that you can do on your own and that greatly broadens your vocabulary, thus helping you in speaking (and in listening and writing). Reading is therefore a highly valuable skill and activity, and it is recommended that English learners try to read as much as possible in English.

Sadly, people nowadays seem to have totally lost interest in this activity. Children are busy with computer games and television, and adults are glued to their computer screen amassing the wealth of knowledge through Internet search engines. Reading does have its loyal fan following, but this fan base is fast disappearing. It seems like people have forgotten the importance of reading

* Reading keeps us occupied. Reading leads to a fruitful use of time. It helps us get rid of worries. Yes, reading is a great stress buster! * Reading helps develop your cognitive abilities such as creative and critical thinking skills. * The more you read, the more creative and imaginative you become. * Reading improves your grasping skills and sharpens your analyzing and problem-solving abilities. * Reading gives you knowledge and makes you more confident. * The more you read about others' lives and experiences, the higher the chances of you becoming a better decision-maker.

* Children who are introduced to reading at an early age are seen to have a better understanding of phonics. They acquire language skills with ease, have a richer vocabulary and possess greater cognitive abilities Although there is no particular age as such to take to reading, it is a lot easier to inculcate it as a habit during childhood rather than forcing it upon the individual in the later stages of life. * Children think and act is a different way. * Reading not only adds to their general knowledge but also shapes their personalities.

* Understanding of the sounds for each alphabet. * Understanding of the meaning of words and phrases. Phonics plays an important role in helping a child to learn how to read. A child first learns to recognize and manipulate the sounds of letters before he learns to read. They put together letters and read the words formed by making use of the sound associated with each letter. At School, Kids will learn to recognize and name all 26 uppercase letters and some lowercase letters. They will recognize their own first name and be able to write it. The ability to read requires the combination of:

* Creating Attractive Learning Atmosphere Teachers may make ample use of colored stationery, cartoon characters, familiar articles appearing in child's routine life. * Blending Lessons with Fun There must be fun and creative activities, field visits, picture coloring, story sessions to connect new vocabulary with events occurring daily routines. * Learning with Music Young minds tend to pick up music and songs faster than normal textual information. * Games and Rewards Teachers may introduce fun games to make reading more fun.
