3 CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER ARTS PRECINCT 04.25.2012 THE GAILLARD CENTER The design and planning for the precinct will complement the city's $142 million renovation of the Galliard Center and create a civic destination for artistic activity, including outdoor public performance spaces. * DMS 2010

Scope ties together with green space elements previously reviewed and approved by BAR

What type of activities would you like to see here? What currently works best about the space? What needs to be most improved? How would you describe or envision the space?

12 CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER ARTS PRECINCT 04.25.2012 WE ASKED: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK DESIGN WORKSHOP DESIGN WORKSHOP 01.05.12 (Design Team) Some of the themes we heard were: Flexibility to accommodate multiple users and uses Green / Open space Provide shade Places to sit Garden that feels ‘like a garden’ Variety of spaces Recognize civic significance

13 CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER ARTS PRECINCT 04.25.2012 BUIST ACADEMY WORKSHOP BUIST ACADEMY (SMH architects) Building expansion currently under construction Gaillard green space currently used by Buist students for P.E. Commitment is for ongoing use of green space by Buist Academy, including State-required 80’ x 100’ field BUIST ACADEMY

14 CHARLESTON GAILLARD CENTER ARTS PRECINCT 04.25.2012 BUIST ACADEMY WORKSHOP GAILLARD ARTS PRECINCT WORKSHOP 02.01.12 (CCDC) 6 th grade students from Buist Academy were grouped into teams to explore options for how to create the best possible environment for the users of the space: Requested plenty of green space, gardens and open areas Water features, sculptures, areas for seating and picnics Many teams had several performance spaces scattered throughout the space green space gardens seating play performance
