2 This is an overview of what you can expect from the unit Pink and Say! You will have the opportunity to review this photo album throughout the unit to help you understand the expectations and to reflect on what you are learning. Remember! Self –assess and set goals for your learning!!! Purpose:

3 Learning Goals: identify elements of the Civil War summarize a story analyze the changes characters undergo performance task: What can you do in your neighborhood or school to show respect and acceptance to others?

4 You will understand that: that literature reflects the world that we live in, and we can make sense of our world by analyzing and understanding what we read The standards taught in this unit are: ELA Texas Standards met in this unit: (3) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Theme and Genre (A) summarize and explain the lesson or message of a work of fiction as its theme; and (6) Reading/Comprehension of Literary Text/Fiction (B) describe the interaction of characters including their relationships and the changes they undergo. Also, the Social Studies Standard (4) History (A) describes the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Texas You will be able to: make connections between text and self and then apply these connections to real-world issues.

8 Creating a Found Poem Found Poem: a poem that you create using only words and phrases from the story. Directions: 1. Read the story and the graphic organizer 2. Write down important words and phrases that relate to the theme, or message, of the story. 3. Use words that show imagery 4. Arrange the words and phrases in ways that make new connections between them. 11 GOAL your goal is to persuade your community library to combine both themes by purchasing books about the Civil War ROLE you are a Civil War historian and community activist (someone who wants to bring social change to their community) AUDIENCE staff of your community library SITUATION your community library is trying to decide on a new summer theme. It is between “Our Nation – Past and Present” and “Respect and Acceptance”. They are asking for volunteers to help them decide which theme they should choose. It is important to the Library staff to have books that are interesting, yet can influence people to make the right choices. All the summer activities for the library will be related to the theme that is chosen PURPOSE you will create a book review to show how these two themes connect to each other STANDARDS your book review will meet the criteria on the assigned rubric – you will work with a partner to determine if you meet the criteria, then self-reflect on your presentation using the rubric before presenting to the whole group Example of Performance task :
