Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 A Day in the Wireless World: Hands-on experiences of the future Wireless World Marion DUPREZ, Orange Labs, France Contributors: WWI Cross Issue Validation Team

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Motivations and key outcomes Several projects exist on Beyond 3G systems –Considering various areas –e.g. future wireless air interfaces, control plane, adaptive radio systems, innovative service platforms How to ensure coherence / complementarity between them? … to the greatest benefit of the end user!  We elaborated a global scenario illustrating how the WWI innovations fit together and jointly shape an end-to-end wireless world.

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 WWI (Wireless World Initiative) comprises several complementary projects, in Framework Program 6 of the EU o Ambient Network, WINNER, E2R - phase 2 in 2006-2007 o MobiLife - stopped at the end of 2006 o SPICE - project started beginning of 2006 (for 2,5 years) To elaborate a common vision on a beyond 3G system concept To promote pre-standardisation activities between the players of the mobile market o vendors, network operators, service providers, regulators and research communities WWI strategy

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Cross Issue Validation in a nutshell CI Validation is a cross-project working group –dedicated to demos and trials of WWI projects CIV main goal is to bring –a general and synthetic view on WWI validation activities CI Validation team is composed of –key representatives of validation work package + one CIV leader Current WWI Cross Issues Migration User acceptance WWI Coordination Team WWI Steering Board Validati on System interfaces Business models Phase I WWI Integrated Projects Liaisons S4ALL MOCCA WINNER E2R AN MobiLife SPICE Phase II WWI Integrated Projects

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Mainly 3 major missions –Sharing of information across projects –Analyzing and creating a global view of WWI demos –Dissemination of our results Missions of CI Validation

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Achievements of CI Validation We are sharing information –to get a good view on other WWI projects' demos and concepts –to help defining demos and evaluate how these demos could fit into an end-to-end system We issued the "CIV deliverable" –provides a global overview of all demos/trials in WWI projects We agreed on common criteria to describe the demos –analyses differences, similarities and complementarities between demos We built a global scenario –This global story line includes all projects highlighting their specificities and complementarities –towards an integrated end-to-end B3G architecture

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Getting a quick overview on WWI demos Get an overview of WWI projects concepts/demos See how they can fit together for B3G integration Find in parallel –Simple everyday life story –Technical references to WWI concepts/demos

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 A Day in the Wireless World

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 WINNER demos WINNER PHY trials –an adaptive, flexible, high-performance radio link, which varies link parameters on a fine-grained, local sub-bandwidth basis –coupled with practical estimation algorithms for timing, channel, and SNR WINNER RRM trials –an advanced adaptive radio resource management architecture –that enables the cooperation between WINNER and legacy RANs by performing intersystem RRM algorithms Integration of both trials –Handover between WINNER and legacy system

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Ambient Networks demos All based on one common use case –story of a highly mobile business traveler interaction with different service as he moves All built from one integrated prototype of the AN control functions Demo 1: Media delivery –Adaptive and context-aware media delivery, realized through a cooperation of the AN control functions Demo 2: Car integration –AN in a vehicular environment, cooperation with networks on the fly Demo 3: Internetworking and Composition –Peer-to-peer based SIP voice calls over heterogeneous networking domains, supported by different network composition models and NodeID Internetworking functionality Demo 4: Mobility –Seamless connectivity facilitated by the interaction between mobility, triggering, multi- access, security and policies

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 E2R demos Demos 1 & 2 on reconfigurable components and systems incorporating FPGAs and multi-core SoCs (System on Chip) Demo 3 on reconfigurable network elements, namely Flexible Base Stations capable of dynamically altering/adapting the Radio Access Technologies and spectrum of operation Demo 4 on both management of reconfigurable network elements/segments (DNPM/ASM - Dynamic Planning and Management/Advanced Spectrum Management) and reconfigurable terminals (REMS - Reconfigurable Equipment Management System) Demo 5 on system architecture exhibiting a) Decision Making capabilities b) Classmarking c) Service Adaptation d) Mobility Management and e) Protocol stack reconfiguration. Demo 6 on efficient control and implementation of reconfigurations by exploiting load balancing and multi-homing capabilities offered by SCTP protocol Demo 7 on Cognitive Pilot Channel (CPC) prototype implementation as a reconfiguration enabler Way forward: End to End Efficiency (E 3 ) –Efficiently exploit key E2R II achievements i.e. technical developments and prototyping, business & regulatory analysis in order to integrate cognitive wireless systems in the Beyond 3G world –Design, development and integration of a E 3 prototyping platform for conducting validation activities of the cognitive systems introduced by E 3

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 SPICE demos Content Management System –Added value functionality of the SPICE platform –Preparation, aggregation, protection and delivery of multimedia content Modality Learner and Recommender Subsystem –Decision process of selecting the right resources, –while observing the users behavior in different contextual situations End-User service creation through natural language –SPICE Automatic Composition Engine aims to provide an environment for end-users, – to easily create services made of assemblies of web services, through a widget available on UE End-User Studio – Graphical Service Creation –This demo shows how a non-technical user can convert his ideas into a technical service. –This can be done in an easy way by using a graphical interface. Split-Terminal GBA Authentication –This demo presents a Firefox extension that allows a user to be authenticated on his PC thanks to his mobile phone connected through Bluetooth.

Session 4d, 10 June 2008 ICT-MobileSummit 2008 Copyright 2008 Conclusion and outlook End-user is the key focus of WWI service enabling technologies Benefit of the Cross Issue Validation storyline is –to depict the offered service in everyday language, –in relation to the underlying technical enablers. Added value from each project's concept/demo is highlighted by its complementarity to other projects.
