2 Definition: seg·re·ga·tion n. 1. The rule or practice of separating people of different races, classes, or ethnic groups. Forcing them to have different schools, housing, and public facilities. 2. A form of discrimination. 3. Not allowing blacks to share restaurants, bathrooms, water fountains, or waiting rooms with whites. Not letting black children go to the same schools as white children.

3 Segregation in the United States The legal or social practice of separating people by their race or ethnicity. Segregation by law is also called de jure segregation. This happens when laws require racial separation. Or when the laws allow segregation. In the United States, state laws kept blacks and whites from using the same public facilities.

8 Segregation as Law Segregation is decided in each state. During the 1950’s segregation was required in the Southern States, including Kentucky.

10 Desegregation In 1954 the Supreme Court judgment of Brown v. Board of Education is given. This is the launch of Desegregation in the South. It is also the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement.
