2 I. Differences Create Tension A. Cultural differences arose between Mexican government officials and Anglo American settlers B.During the 1820s, the Federalists left the Texas colonists alone. The colonists: -Received land titles -Cleared land -Built their homes -Established schools and newspapers -Brought in slaves

4 II. The Fredonian Rebellion A.The first clash in Texas between Anglos and the Mexican government was the Fredonian Rebellion B.In 1825, the Edwards Brothers (Haden and Benjamin) were awarded of vast tract of land in East TX to settle 800 families

The problem was many people (Americans, Cherokees, etc.) were already living on his land without land titles; so Haden Edwards told all of them to move or buy a land title from him D.But, Mexican authorities would not let him charge land titles to settlers already living there

7 II. The Fredonian Rebellion G. Meanwhile, SFA refuses to help Fredonia, and instead offers to help the Mexican authorities! H.Mexican troops were sent to Nacogdoches in 1827 and they crushed the revolt as most fled to the U.S.

8 III. Mexico Investigates Texas A. In an effort to obtain Texas, the U.S. ambassador Anthony Butler proposed that Mexico sell Texas to the U.S. B.Suspicious, the Mexican government sent Mexican General Mier Y Teran on an inspection tour and he concludes that the Anglo influence was too strong in Texas (outnumbered 5 to 1) C.Result? 9 IV. Mexico and Slavery A.In 1829, Mexico issues a decree, or order, abolishing slavery. B.Texas tries to persuade Mexican officials to exempt, or excuse Texas from this decree. C.Result? It causes fear among the Texas colonists that decree will be passed in Texas too

10 V. Mexico Regains Control of Texas A.The Law of April 6, 1830 was a Mexican law based on Mier Y Teran’s recommendations for Texas. i.It stopped all immigration from the U.S. ii.It suspended all empresario contracts. iii.It set up new forts in Texas.

11 V. Mexico Regains Control of Texas B.Soldiers in the forts prevented smuggling, introduction of new slaves, and illegal land speculation. C.Mexico discouraged trade between foreign nations and Texas by placing taxes called customs duties on goods made in foreign nations. D.Result?
