2 Synonyms are words with the same meaning. We use synonyms to make a sentence more interesting.

3 Repeating one word can get boring. This is why synonyms are used. For example: The cat is large. The cat is big. Big and large are synonyms. The words mean the same thing. When writing a sentence we can replace a word with its synonym.

4 Look at this sentence. We played with the kids. The word kids, has more than one synonym. Can you think of one?

5 If you said children then you are correct! You might also say family if the kids were from the same family. We played with the kids. We played with the children. We played with the family.

6 Now, let’s practice together. Read the story on the next page. Rewrite the story by replacing each underlined word with a word in the box that means about the same thing.

We can figure out from this sentence that a migraine makes Amber’s head hurt.
