2 Self-disclosure Self-disclosure is sharing personal information or feelings with another person.

3 Self-disclosure People engage in self- disclosure to create and maintain relationships.

4 Use the following categories to begin thinking about your self-disclosure.

5 Public Things most people would know about individuals.

6 Public/Private Things individuals would tell others if they asked questions.

7 Private Things only a few others might know about individuals.

8 Example of self-disclosure categories Public: I’m athletic. Public/Private: I write poetry. Private: Certain fears.

9 Johari Window Is a four-part box diagram which represents the awareness people have of themselves and others.

10 Imagine the first stage Known to Self Not Known To Self

11 Then, imagine a second stage. Known to Others Not Known To Others

12 Now, put the two stages together into the full Johari window.

14 The quadrants can change size/shape for various people.

18 Stranger in a Plane Telling very personal information to a stranger – never see the stranger again – never be reminded about what they revealed.
