From: John the Apostle 3rd John vss 5-8 Outline for Mar 13, 2011 To: Gaius c/o Sovereign Grace Fellowship P. O. Box 3078 235 High Street Boscawen, N. H. 03303-3078 1

2 3 John 1:1-14 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. (2) Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. (3) For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. (4) I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. (5) Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, (6) who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. (7) For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. (8) Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. (9) I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. (10) So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church. (11) Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. (12) Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also add our testimony, and you know that our testimony is true. (13) I had much to write to you, but I would rather not write with pen and ink. (14) I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. (1:15) Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends, every one of them.

3 3 John 1:9-12 I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority.

4 Diotrephes' terrible record. Vss. 9-11 I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have first place among them, does not receive us. (10) This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome the brothers himself, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church. (11) Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God. 9b. He loved to have the preeminence. This is one wrongheaded dude! 9c. He will own no competitors. He even refused to receive an emissary of Christ (John). 10a. It may be necessary for John to confront Diotrephes head on with regards to his sin. His works were evil.

5 Diotrephes' terrible record. 10b. He was a lying slanderer. 10c. If that wasn't enough he refused to welcome those brothers (the strangers) that Gaius we assume had received. 10d. But, if you received the brothers as did Gaius he would seek to have you excommunicated from the fellowship of God's saints. This man was an example of pastoral abuse and authority. Be Careful to pattern yourself after others who pattern Christ well. 11. Do not imitate guys like that. What he does is evil in the sight of God. A person who does evil has not seen (know) God.

6 Demetrius on the other hand enjoys a wonderful testimony. V.12 Demetrius has a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. And we also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true. 12a. Not only does Demetrius gained the attention of his fellow saints through his good works, even the truth itself bears witness that his works are good. 12b. And John also testified concerning Demetrius' deeds.

7 Matthew 25:31-46 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. (32) All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. (33) He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. (34) Then the King will say to those on His right, 'Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (35) For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; (36) I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me.' (37) "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? (38) When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? (39) When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?' (40) "And the King will answer them, 'I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.' (41) Then He will also say to those on the left, 'Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!

8 (42) For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink; (43) I was a stranger and you didn't take Me in; I was naked and you didn't clothe Me, sick and in prison and you didn't take care of Me.' (44) "Then they too will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help You?' (45) "Then He will answer them, 'I assure you: Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me either.' (46) "And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
