5. Linking and Auxiliary Verbs Linking verbs are not action verbs. Linking verbs are connectors.  They connect the subject to the noun or adjective that describes it. The fans were eager for a win. (fans is the subject; eager describes the fans) Remember, linking verbs are like a pivot point. You only need ONE and you can flip the sentence—it should make some sense. She is pretty. Pretty is she.

6. Linking and Auxiliary Verbs Auxiliary verbs are not action verbs, but they need action verbs.. Auxiliary verbs are words in the verb phrase that are not the main verb. They must have left late.  What’s the main verb? (left—main verb / action verb)  must and have are auxiliary verbs. Linking verbs and auxiliary verbs will never be in the same sentence.
