DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING www.deet.nt.gov.au LEARNING POWER (ELLI)

DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING www.deet.nt.gov.au Objectives To give a brief overview of the research that underpins ELLI To introduce ELLI, learning power and the seven dimensions of learning To gain an understanding of the process that would involve implementing ELLI into school programs Provide opportunities for questions DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING Department of Education and Training www.det.nt.gov.au

DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING www.deet.nt.gov.au Research The effective Lifelong Learning Inventory (ELLI) was developed over a three year period at the University of Bristol, in a project funded by the Lifelong Learning Foundation. The research project gathered data on nearly 2000 learners from the age of 7 through to adult learners and revealed seven dimensions of learning power. The data found that through the course of formal schooling –Learners become more fragile and dependent the longer they are in school –Student’s sense that learning is learnable decreases through school –Creative thinking drops steadily from Year 4 to Year 10 –Critical curiosity, meaning making and strategic awareness drop from Year 4 to Year 8 Department of Education and Training www.det.nt.gov.au

DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING www.deet.nt.gov.au Seven Dimensions Department of Education and Training www.det.nt.gov.au Changing and learning * a sense of myself as someone who learns and changes over time Meaning making* making connections and seeing that learning 'matters to me' Critical curiosity* an orientation to want to 'get beneath the surface' Creativity risk-taking, playfulness, imagination and intuition Learning relationships learning with and from others and also able to manage without them Strategic awareness being aware of my thoughts, feelings and actions as a learner and able to use that awareness to manage learning processes Resilience the readiness to persevere in the development of my own learning power

DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION AND TRAINING www.deet.nt.gov.au Department of Education and Training www.det.nt.gov.au Students learn about the seven dimensions through metaphors (eg: cartoon association) By increasing awareness of the learning dimensions and by fostering them within the classroom, teachers are able to stimulate learning power and help children to become better learners. “One of the most widely reported benefits is of learners and teachers becoming confident with a whole new language for learning. Many find their profiles motivate them to improve their learning.” Vital Hub, 2007 Engaging with the Seven Dimensions
