Mrs. Sosa’s Kindergarten Class

Problem Which fruits will sink or float in water?

Hypothesis We think that the bigger fruits will sink and the smaller fruits will float.

Hypothesis Votes

Materials Apples Bananas Grapes Limes Oranges clear container with water paper towels

Procedure 1. Fill the clear container with water. 2. Place a fruit in the container. 3. Watch what happens. Did it sink or float? 4. Repeat 1-3 with each fruit. 5. Records and discuss results.

Variable We changed the types of fruits tested. Control We used the same container of water and procedure.

Apple Results The apples floated !

Bananas Results The banana floated!

Grape Results The tiny grapes sank!

Lime Results Wow! The limes sank !

Orange Results The orange floated !

Conclusion We were surprised to find out that not all heavy fruits sank. Our hypothesis was incorrect, just because an object has greater mass does not mean it will sink. We had lots of fun doing this experiment.
