2 The Qualification Three year degree with an academic and a practice orientation Designed to allow students to study and meet other interests and demands on their time Attracts people who are interested in working in health and social care settings, particularly in the community and the voluntary sector BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Studies

3 Course Aims To produce graduates who are: (i) the ability to integrate specific subject knowledge, values and skills; and who are (ii)equipped with the skills to promote the well being of people in complex situations

4 The Course An applied discipline with strong value base The programme covers a broader range of subjects and interests

6 Programme features Tutorial system: all students have a personal tutor in stages one & two; dissertation supervisor stage three Smaller cohort: main cohort 30 – 35 students Work Based Learning Opportunities

7 Graduate skills: transferable across a range of settings & contexts Employability : range of possibilities International exchanges: Erasmus Programme features

8 Your Application Academic Qualifications including: - 5 GCSE’s at grade C or above (including English and Mathematics) - A minimum of 240 points at A level or equivalent (must include at least 160 points from two A levels or one 12-unit award. AS level may also contribute) What we look for:

9 Your Application Non Standard Academic Qualifications BTEC or Diploma in a social science related area. Access to higher education, to include Social Science units Applications from those returning to education are welcome Evidence of academic study in the last five years is required

10 Personal Qualities An interest and knowledge of health and social care A caring and thoughtful attitude towards others An ability to work on one’s own and as part of a team An ability to communicate well An ability to empathise with others An ability to solve problems An ability to use one’s initiative

11 Job Opportunities Previous graduate employment areas: A drugs counsellor in Dartmoor Prison Teaching health and social care to sixth form students Manager of respite care home for older people Practice manager in a GP’s surgery NCH project worker, working with vulnerable young people Advice worker with Connexions
