Paper 2: Writing Writing a discursive composition Before you start writing, think carefully about what you want to write. Make your introduction interesting by asking a question. It does not matter if you agree or disagree with the point of view stated. Present both points of view, giving your opinions in a formal or neutral way (use examples). You should never express only one side of the argument. Do not forget to use the appropriate linkers when introducing your ideas.

Paper 2: Writing Plan your paragraphs – Paragraph One: Introduction – Paragraph Two: Positive aspects or advantages – Paragraph Three: Negative aspects or disadvantages – Paragraph Four: Conclusion Try to use more complex sentences (relative clauses, passives and conditionals) Even if you make small mistakes, you will be given more marks for trying to use difficult grammar. Remember When you edit and check your writing, do not only look for grammar and spelling mistakes. Check that you have used a n appropriate style for the person you are writing to.

Paper 2: A writing example Writing a discursive composition: Everybody would like to be rich and famous. Everybody keep saying that being rich and famous is the best thing that could happen to them. I don’t think so. There are pros and cons on being rich and famous. I think being rich and famous means not having a private life, because everywhere you go you are followed by a photographer. You always have to have a bodyguard for your own safety, and that means never being alone. You always have to be careful of who you are meeting, of what you are wearing. You’re allowed to be yourself only in your own house.

Paper 2: A writing example On the other hand, you don’t have to worry about having any money at the end of the month or don’t know how to pay the bills. I think the best thing is to have a nice job that you like and earn enough money to allow you to have a nice house with a garden, and some free time to spend with your family and friends. The most important thing in life is being happy and I don’t think money makes you happy.

Paper 2: Writing Writing a discursive composition Homework: Choose one Computer games teach us nothing and young people should avoid them. Rich countries should share their technology with poor countries. The future role of technology in the home. Would you rather be a politician, a teacher or a musician? Watching television is a waste of people’s time. Why would anyone want to work in the countryside?
