By Glenna Vasquez Period 2 physics

 The purpose of this project is to make a real working guitar out of a tissue box  Each student has to work individually in his/her own guitar  Dee what the function of a guitar is  How can sound be produced by a rubber band?

Standards  4a) Sound Is a longitudinal wave whose speed depends on the properties of the medium in which it propagates Objectives 1. Design and construct musical instruments exclusively make of shoe box/ tissue box 2. Explain the physics of music 3. Explain why there are variations in sound among instruments and among voices

Problem  How can I make a guitar that sounds and ias tuned like a normal guitar? Hypothesis  If I cut the rubber band and tie them around the sticks at the top of my box, then I can continue to tie them until they are in tune

1. Tissue box 2. Rubber bands 3. Popsicle sticks 4. Paper fasteners 5. Construction paper 6. Paper

1. First, I cut open a hole at the top of my box and covered the box and paper roll with construction paper 2. Then, I put holes into my paper roll and stuck popsicle sticks in the roll 3. Insert the paper roll into the tissue box and hot glue in place. Then place paper fasteners at the bottom. 4. Cut rubber bands and tie one end to the paper fastener and the other at the popsicle stick at the top. 5. Hot glue popsicle sticks at the bottom of the rubber bands in order to elevate the strings.

 While working on my guitar I noticed that the thicker the string, the deeper the sound. Vice versa, the thinner the string, the higher it sounds.

 The physics of music is that when you pluck the strings of the guitar or use a bow on the violin or hit a key on the piano, the movement causes vibrations. These vibrations in turn produce sound.  This vibration is carried in the air as a longitudinal wave and we are able to pick up the sound and decipher the pitch.

 In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct, because I was able to tune the guitar by wrapping the rubber bands around the popsicle stick until I got the right sound.  Now you are able to hear the scale on my guitar.

 This project was a simple one.  Making a guitar was fun.  The only difficult part was when I tried tuning my guitar because after awhile, they started to sound weak in a different pitch.  So I had to constantly fix them.

 No hitting anyone with your guitar or any other materials  No pointing materials at classmates  Don’t play with anyone’s projects

 Music is everywhere and can be played on the simplest things  An issue with music is that many schools cut funds for music classes  This is a serious issue because not only do the students lose another extracurricular activity, but they also lose a chance to find a hidden talent and a chance to play a favorite past time.  They also lose the chance and joy of playing an instrument.
