2 Cumbria Seasonal & Intranasal Flu Programme 2013 Pharmacy delivery

3 HISTORY NHS Flu vaccination 1 st commissioned from pharmacy in 2012 – all risk groups, for all the flu season First season – 55 pharmacies involved – Over 5000 vaccinations delivered GPs really co-operative, and happy with the service …….NOT!

4 And so to 2013………………. PCT replaced by Cumbria, Northumberland,Tyne & Wear ‘Local’ Area Team Intranasal flu pilot for Cumbria? Joint approach to NHS England Screening & Imms Team from the CNTW LPCs – in April June (ish) – Screening and Imms lead agrees to commission I.M. service Parallel Service development

5 Effective training for all staff On Line Training provided by Area Team Screening & Imms Theory behind BLS, anaphylaxis & flu vaccination Face to face practical training Included BLS and practical scenario training All funded by pharmacy contractors Private trainer privately contracted with a member of the area team - very cost effective @ £37.50 each!

6 Disaster Strikes? Start of July – we are being commissioned End of July -No we’re not! What to do? Negotiate!!

7 THE FRANTIC PHASE All those PSNC ‘negotiating skills’ seminars can’t have been wasted……..

22 DEFINE STAFF ROLES Administer Vaccine and record details - Pharmacist See patient out of Consultation Room and assist them with patient survey - Flu Helper Complete notifications - Anyone / Everyone

23 PLANNING FOR NEXT SEASON START EARLY… MAKE SURE OF YOUR STOCK – ORDER IN SPRING LATE SPRING/EARLY SUMMER LPC MEETINGS TO CELEBRATE SUCCESS/PASS ON HINTS & TIPS LATE SUMMER – PMR TO GENERATE A LIST OF VACCINATED PATIENTS - CONTACT WITH REMINDER BY POST, TEXT, EMAIL OR CARRIER PIGEON

24 How Did We Do? Over 15,000 I.M. vaccines given in CNTW. 9,200 of these in Cumbria Approx. 12% - 1848 people were vaccinated in pharmacies who were NEW to flu vaccination Still only 3.6% of the region’s total – though 7.5% in Cumbria. Plenty more to go at!

25 INTRANASAL 13,573 vaccinations Of which…. 11,113 given in community pharmacies – 82% 37.2% of primary school age children

26 FEEDBACK From the public - Excellent! From the GPs…….. Largely Weary Resignation With occasional tantrums!
