Redemption John 8:2-11 David Thompson Sunday 18 th May 2014

Compassion:Shouldn’t we just be concentrating on evangelism? Mercy:Why should we help people who don’t deserve it? Justice:Why should I bother to do anything; surely I can’t make a difference?

Can I help someone who is ‘in sin’ without condoning that sin?

Jesus looks beyond the sin and sees the person Jesus neither condones the sin nor condemns the person Jesus lifts a person out of sin

“Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:26-27

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” John 3:16-18

Jesus, our Redeemer! “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.” Psalm 103:2-6 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Luke 4:18-19
