THE DELAY SPECTRUM

INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to my presentation for Introduction to Music Production at Berklee College of Music and Coursera. My name is Gary Unpingco. I am a songwriter, singer, and musician. I have been recording with digital and analog for quite a few years.

You can hear my work on various websites including;  www.facebook.com/zenmusic www.facebook.com/zenmusic  www.soundcloud.com/zenus www.soundcloud.com/zenus  www.soundclick.com/zenus www.soundclick.com/zenus  http://www.jango.com/music/ZEN?l=0 http://www.jango.com/music/ZEN?l=0  www.myspace.com/zenus www.myspace.com/zenus

In this presentation. I will demonstrate the delay spectrum with examples of comb filtering, creating pitches with delays, slapback delays, and synchronized long delays.

COMB FILTERING In signal processing, a comb filter adds a delayed version of a signal to itself. The frequency response of a comb filter consists of a series of regularly spaced spikes, giving the appearance of a comb.

SLAPBACK ECHO Slapback echo uses a longer delay time (75 to 250 milliseconds), with little or no feedback.

SYNCHRONIZED LONG DELAYS Stereo delays are often used with long, synchronized delay times for creating dynamic and stereo rhythmic effects.

PITCH DELAY You can create, modify, enhance and alter the pitch of audio with delay.

In the preceding examples it is immediately obvious how a piece of audio can be manipulated and altered with delay. The multitude of variations are only limited by your imagination and creativity. While doing this project, I found so many different ways I could create examples of the main themes. When it comes down to it, the ultimate goal is to create the best possible audio track for your purposes. Everything we are doing are only learning tools and in the end it is all subjective.
