Create Effective Digital Presentations This is a powerpoint I created for a lesson on species adaptation. It was used with guided notes, class discussion, and an exit slip. The powerpoint contains text, images, and a video clip.

Science November 1, 2011 AIM: How can a species adapt to survive in changing environments? DO NOW: What happens to a species when they do not fit in to their environment? Why does this happen? Please answer in full sentences.

Review... Yesterday in Bugland, when did red bugs survive the best?

Review... Yesterday in Bugland, when did red bugs survive the best? When did yellow bugs survive best?

Review... Yesterday in Bugland, when did red bugs survive the best? When did yellow bugs survive best? What caused the change in their survival?

Key Vocabulary Species: A group of related living things that resemble on another, share similar characteristics, and can breed only among themselves. Environment: The surrounding area, including land, water, weather, and other species. Adapt: to adjust oneself to different conditions or environments.

Adaption – Why does it happen? Why do you think a species may need to adapt? On your do now sheet, write down three reasons why a species may need to adapt.

Why Adaptation Occurs For survival after:  Moving to a new environment  Changes in the environment  Changes in the food or water supply In short, species adapt out of need.

A Case Study in Adaptation Peppered Moths and the Industrial Revolution This is a light colored peppered moth: They lived in England and were a very healthy species before the Industrial Revolution. Most had white or light gray wings with black spots.

A Case Study in Adaptation Peppered Moths and the Industrial Revolution As the Industrial Revolution began, factories took over the environment, and smoke and smog started to clog the air. The environment in England changed: Before the Industrial Revolution During the Industrial Revolution

A Case Study in Adaptation Peppered Moths and the Industrial Revolution As time went on, the changing environments caused the peppered moths to adapt. They used to be able to blend in with light colored tree bark and be hidden from predators. With the trees covered in soot from the factories, most peppered moths began to look like this: The video clip will reinforce how the moth population changed and then normalized.

Video Clip – Peppered Moth Adaptation

A Case Study in Adaptation Peppered Moths and the Industrial Revolution Today, the population has normalized, and there are an equal number of light and dark peppered moths. Why can both types of moths survive now? What has changed since the Industrial Revolution?

Lesson Summary On a notecard, write down 3 new things you learned about how and/or why species must adapt to their environment.
