INCLUDING MELANIE: REFELECTIONS ON DILEMMAS OF DIFFERENCE IN CULTURE, SOCIAL CONTEXT, LANGUAGE, AND DISABILITY INCLUDING MELANIE: REFELECTIONS ON DILEMMAS OF DIFFERENCE IN CULTURE, SOCIAL CONTEXT, LANGUAGE, AND DISABILITY National Early Childhood Inclusion Institute Chapel Hill, NC May 16, 2011 Beth Harry, Ph.D., Professor, University of Miami, FL
A Free Appropriate Education with Inclusive Supports Inclusion: in family love and activity Inclusion: in social activities Inclusion: in the right classroom Inclusion: in the right therapy setting Inclusion: in a natural environment Inclusion: in general education
Inclusion for Carissa: Full Inclusion, All the Way She’s the little red engine chugging up the hill. She’s extremely bright, inquisitive, independent, adorable…She captivates people. She learns by imitation. That’s why she needs to be with normally developing peers. As far as her education is concerned – what’s important is not the product but the process by which she learns You’re a mother on a mission, with a vision. Go for it!
There’s nothing wrong with her. She just wants her Momma! Kanita
Inclusion for Kanita: Advanced, Structured Classroom K teacher: She did have outbursts, but she responded to redirection Grandma: My scrap-book has everything they sent home from Head Start till now Auntie: Mom’s too soft on her Psychologist: EBD in denial of her feelings ED 2 nd grade teacher: Do you know this kid? What’s she doing here?
Inclusion for Robert: Get to Know this Family Why do I have 9 kids? Because I just love having kids. I love being a mother. “To Robert, with love, from Mom and Dad, Christmas, 1999” Baby – bring momma’s pen. Robert needs help. Please do something!
Inclusion for Rafael: Going to School with his Brother El es la alegria de la casa. El lleva una vida normal – igual que los demas (He is our happiness. He lives a normal life, just like the others) No ibamos a hacer fuerza – a tratar de luchar que lo dejaran ahi, porque ellos son los que saben…uno no puede oponerse (We weren’t going to put any pressure – to fight for him to stay there because they are the ones who know – you really can’t oppose that)
Inclusion for Silvia: Just Teach Me to Read! Es una persona muy contenta” (She’s a very happy person”) Este problema tengo yo - que ya esta grande y no sabe leer nada. Eso es lo que quiero, que ella aprenda a leer, porque sin sabe leer no sabe nada” This is my problem – that she’s grown up and she can’t read. This is what I want, that she learns to read, because without being able to read you know nothing…
