12 How do I apply for Financial Aid? In order to receive Federal Aid you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA): https://fafsa.ed.gov/ This is the only way you can get Federal Aid! How much does it cost to complete the FAFSA??? 12

13 Grants * Do not repay (FREE MONEY!) *Usually awarded on the basis of financial need *Awarded by Federal, State, Institutional Agencies 13

14 Work-Study *Allows student to earn money to help pay additional education costs *Students can work up to 20 hours per week *Does not guarantee a job 14

15 Loans Funds students and parents BORROW to help pay college expenses *Subsidized, Unsubsidized, Perkin’s Loan, Parent PLUS Loan *Repayment usually begins after education is finished *Only borrow what is really needed *These monies must be repaid! 15

16 Scholarships *Money that does not have to be paid back. For every dollar you receive in Scholarship funds, that is one less dollar you have to borrow! *Awarded on the basis of merit, skill or unique characteristic *Look for scholarships at your high school, your workplace, your parents’ workplace, your church, clubs you belong to, or local businesses 16

17 Scholarship Timeline *Late October, November, December Search for Scholarships OSAC, Fastweb, Schoolsoup, talk to your High School Career Counselor! *January Submit FAFSA (and CSS Profile, if applicable) *Mid-March – Mid-April Receive Financial Aid offer and Admission offer 17

19 Don’t be scammed! Do not pay to file the FAFSA! The FAFSA is a Free Application at fafsa.gov not fafsa.com! If you are contacted by a scholarship program or agency that you are not sure about, feel free to contact the financial aid office to ask about their legitimacy and/or credibility. 19
