2 The Birth of Surrealism  Surrealism evolved from the Dada movement shortly after WWI.  Andre Breton, a French Doctor who served in WWI, led the movement (although he was a writer, not a painter).  Surrealist artists were interested in the writings of psychoanalysts like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung.  Surrealists used the subconscious mind and dreams as the inspiration for a new type of art.

3 What is Surrealism?  The word surreal means bizarre or dreamlike.  Realism describes art that is depicted as true to natural life as possible: realistic Surrealism = realistic objects in a bizarre or dreamlike setting Surrealism = realistic objects in a bizarre or dreamlike setting

4 Giorgio de Chirico 1888-1978  Greek-Italian proto- surrealist painter  Studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany  Often painted the piazzas and archways of the city of Turin, Italy during his “Metaphysical” phase  Influenced the Surrealist artists Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, and René Magritte

9 Salvador Dali 1904-1989  Very famous and influential Spanish Surrealist  Admired Pablo Picasso and did his early paintings in a cubist style  Dali was very eccentric and was kicked out of school for his behavior.  He was often at odds with other Surrealists because of his political views.

15 René Magritte 1898-1967  Belgian Surrealist  Worked as a poster and advertisement designer until he was able to be a full time painter.  His first painting was ridiculed, so he moved to Paris where he met Andre Breton and became involved with the Surrealists.  Later returned to Brussels and remained there during WWII  Often painted ordinary objects in unusual juxtapositions
