Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures throughout all generations. Psalm 145:13

Review

What is a Parable? A short story that teaches a lesson.

Why did Jesus use Parables? Two Reasons to reveal (show) the truth to those who wanted to know it to conceal (hide) the truth from those who were no interested

What was happening? (context, location & people ) These two parables were told after the Parable of the weeds, but before the disciples and Jesus went in to the house where Jesus explained the Parable of the Weeds.

The people listening were the ones who just heard the Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Weeds. Jesus is still in the boat on the water as He was when telling the two previous parables.

31 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” 33 He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

Simile – a comparison that uses the words “like or “as.” “The Kingdom of Heaven is like…”

Mustard seeds are very small and were a seed the people would have planted and were common in Jesus’ day. Mustard bushes or trees can grow to be much larger than a man.

Leaven is a small piece of the dough from last week. The small amount of leaven was combined with all the new dough and would make it rise.

What does this mean? At the time the parable was being told the Kingdom of Heaven on earth was small. Jesus, the disciples, and a few other people. Would the Kingdom of Heaven stay small? No, just as the little mustard seed and the little bit of leaven grew tremendously the Kingdom of Heaven has grown and will continue to grow.

All of us who have believed in Jesus and follow Him, are already part of the Kingdom of Heaven! What does this mean for us? As disciples, followers of Jesus we are commanded by Jesus to tell other people about Him.
