thomas.porathe@ntnu.no Usability tests 4 days in full mission bridge simulators, 2 ships and VTS The NoGo area service was tested during the 29 September to 3 October simulator session at Chalmers University in Gothenburg.

thomas.porathe@ntnu.no 11 professional British, Swedish and Danish bridge officers, a harbour master, pilots and VTS operators with experience from traffic in the Humber area was used for the test. All the participants were male from age 32 to 58, with a mean age of 47 years. They all had a sea time ranging from 12 to 30 years, mean 22 years.

thomas.porathe@ntnu.no Observations and Feedback ConnectionalProceduralFunctionalHMI + VTS/pilot-OOW communication + VTS/pilot extra confidence + lessen work load of VTS/pilot explaining tidal situation + less VHF traffic to VTS asking for gauge information - NoGo areas should be automatic along planned route - Alarm for entering NoGo area - Complicated, too many clicks

thomas.porathe@ntnu.no Survey 1. What is your opinion about the tested NoGo area concept? (n=8) 2. Do you think a similar NoGo area concept will become reality in the future? (n=5)

thomas.porathe@ntnu.no Professional Acceptance Rating 3. What is your professional opinion about the system tested? (n=9) “Totally unacceptable” “Not very acceptable” “Neither for, nor against” “Acceptable” “Very acceptable” “Extremely acceptable” Average score: 3.3 Participant ID
