1 The Days Of The Week Origin.
to investigate the origin of the days of the week; to learn why we write the weekdays with capital letters; to find out why we have seven days in a week; to get to know why Sunday is the first day of the week; to learn if Russian and English days of the week have the same origin.

2 SEVEN WEEK DAYS Nobody really knows why we have seven days in a week. They say that we can see seven objects in the sky: Sun, Moon ,Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn. So, we have seven week days. Others think that seven is a holly number. We know that seven is a symbol of pyramids. People have seven Wonders of the World. God has seven days to create the world. Some people believe we have seven days in a week because four phases of the Moon last seven days.

3 THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK
In Russia Monday is the first day of the week. But in Britain Sunday is the first day of the week. Why is it so? According to the Bible, Saturday is the last day of the week. It makes Sunday as the first day of the week for many people. Some countries have Monday as the first day of the week because it is the first day of the working week.

4 THE ORIGIN OF THE DAYS OF THE WEEK
We have learnt that the English names of the week come from the combination of old Roman names and Germanic dialects. Sunday means the "Day of Sun". It is the old Roman name. Monday means the "Day of Moon". It is the old Roman name, too. Saturday is named after the planet Saturn. It is the old Roman name as well. The Romans call the days of the week after the objects in the sky.

The other days of the week have the old Germanic origin. They name them after the old Gods. Tuesday is named after the god Tyr. He is the son of the chief god Odin. He is the god of war.

(Wednesday) среда means the middle, (середина). (Thursday) четверг means the fourth (day), (четвертый). (Friday) пятница means the fifth (day), (пятый). (Saturday) суббота means the Sabbath, a day of the rest.  Now we know that the English and Russian names of the days of the week have different origin.

11 WHY DO WE WRITE THE NAMES OF THE WEEK WITH THE CAPITAL LETTERS?
We write days of the week with capital letters because they are named after the gods and planets. We know we must write names of people and planets with capital letters.
