5. City Life-The Good, Bad, and Ugly Most people lived in small and compact living areas. Poor Families- short houses made of mud bricks Wealthy families- large houses with a center courtyard Streets were dirty from trash Houses had few windows and not properly ventilated for smoke from oil lamps Gathering places were large and regal. Large government buildings were the pride of the Athens Built on the acropolis-the hill above the city The Parthenon, built to honor the goddess Athena, is the most well-known

6. Religion Bigger the building for a god/goddess = greater importance! Believed in many gods/goddesses Apart of everyday life Olympian Gods were the most important (12 of them) Created myths to convey their importance Taught lessons from these myths to have people follow specific ways of life 12 Olympian Gods/Goddesses Zeus-ruler of gods Hera-goddess of marriage Poseidon-god of the sea Hestia-goddess of the hearth (family fire) Demeter-god of agriculture Ares-god of war Athena-goddess of wisdom and war Apollo-god of the sun, poetry, and music Artemis-goddess of the moon and the hunt Hephaestus-god of fire and metalworkers Aphrodite-goddess of love and beauty Hermes-messenger of the gods and god of travel

Architecture Temple built as dwellings for gods/goddesses Used 3 types of columns-Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian Doric- slim, simple, tapered off at the top Ionic-slim with spiral fixture at the top Corinthian- like the Ionic but with a fancier top (with carved leaves) Inside the temples contained sculptures and a main room for the god/goddess Most temples were based on the same design Why is the Athenian architecture so special?

Sculptor apprentices started-master sculptors finished Collaborated with metalworkers-attached metal to sculptures Known for creating life-like sculpture First started with Egyptian based sculptures How would they have known this? Then evolved into more sophisticated figures Why change things up? Famous sculptors were known for being true communicators with gods when creating their liking

10. Philosophy Men gathered at the Agora to discuss the world around them Discussions over nature, ideas, and how things worked Socrates asked his followers… What is the good life for a man? What is truth? How do you know? Socrates questioning eventually caught up to him and landed him in jail for not honoring the gods properly and leading young men into error and disloyalty-why would this be a big deal back in Ancient Athens? After committing suicide by hemlock in jail, Socrate’s disciple, Plato, and his disciple, Aristotle continued such questioning and thinking. Is it ok to question the world around us today?

11. Sports Athenians and other Greeks loved sports!
