2. The Seaforth Highlanders Emerged from a military amalgamation of 1881. Recruited from Ross and Cromarty, Caithness, Sutherland, Moray and the Western Isles. Wore Mackenzie tartan 19 battalions served in the Great War. 54 Battle honours gained

4. The Black Watch Created out of an amalgamation of 1881. Recruited from Perthshire, Fife and Angus. Wore a red hackle in the hat and dark tartan. 25 battalions fought in the Great War. 76 battle honours gained.

6. Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders Regiment existed from 1793, “Queen’s Own” added by Queen Victoria in 1877. Recruited primarily from Invernesshire. Wore Cameron Tartan, with eagle’s feathers in the glengarry. 19 battalions served on the Great War. 58 battle honours gained.

7. Q.O.C.H.

8. Scots Guards Raised initially in 1662. Recruited all over Scotland and north- west of England. Wore Royal Stuart tartan. 3 battalions fought in the Great War. 33 battle honours won.

9. Royal Scots Fusiliers Raised initially in 1678. Recruited primarily in Ayrshire. Wore tartan trews from 1878. 18 battalions fought in the Great War. 65 battle honours won.

11. Gordon Highlanders Emerged from 1881 military amalgamation. Recruited primarily in Aberdeenshire. Lost the kilt in 1809, wore tartan trews. 21 battalions fought in the Great War. 65 battle honours won.

12. Highland Light Infantry Emerged from the military amalgamation of 1881. Recruited from Glasgow, Lanarkshire and the Highlands. First to change from kilts to tartan trews in1810. 26 battalions fought in the Great War. 75 battle honours won.

14. Royal Scots Greys Formed initially under a different name in 1681 as a cavalry regiment. Recruited from all over Scotland. Bearskin head-dress and eagle badge, rode grey horses. 26 battle honours achieved.

16. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Emerged from the military amalgamation of 1881. Recruited from Argyll, Sutherland, Dumbarton, Stirling, Clackmannan and Kinross. Kilted until 1809, tartan trews from 1864.6 tassels on the dress sporran. Red and white dicing on the glengarry 27 battalions fought in the Great War. 78 battle honours won.

18. King’s Own Scottish Borderers Raised initially in Edinburgh in 1689 and known as K.O.S.B. in 1887. Recruited from Edinburgh and lowlands. Wore tartan trews from 1881, in Leslie tartan. 12 K.O.S.B. battalions fought in the Great War. 75 battle honours achieved.

20. Battalions were also formed of Scots living elsewhere, even from those living abroad but of Scottish origin, eg the Liverpool Scottish, the London Scottish and the South African Scottish.

21. The Royal Scots The Royal Scots were the regiment that most men from Peeblesshire joined. (Not to be confused with the Royal Scots Fusiliers or the Royal Scots Greys.) The 6 th, 7 th, 8 th and 9 th Battalions of the Royal Scots were based in Peebles during the war.

23. The Royal Scots (Contd.) The 16 th Battalion of the Royal Scots is famously known as McCrae’s Battalion, after Sir George McCrae, who raised and commanded this new Battalion in 1914. This was the battalion that the entire Heart of Midlothian football team famously joined.
