Terry L. Jensen I began teaching language arts in secondary education in 1988 in a residential treatment center for teens. From there I moved into public education and taught in a middle school for two years before transferring into the alternative high school where I am currently assigned. I became involved in technology education in 2000, when I became a Master Teacher in the Intel Teach to the Future® program. I was then assigned as the Technology Integration Coordinator (TIC) for my building, responsible for teaching the teachers how to implement technology into their teaching. In 2002 I earned my certification as a Reading Specialist. Now my assignment also includes teaching Humanities, Reading, and Yearbook. My understanding of Technology in Education has been a great strength to my ability to better prepare my students for life in the 21 st Century.

Reflections on a Master’s Degree The past two years spent earning my master’s degree has been two years of extreme growth. I have had the opportunity of working in a cohort which consisted of teachers from at least 4 different school districts throughout northern Utah. Each one of us came into the program with various levels of expertise and together we grew, taught, shared and learned. I came to respect each member of the cohort for the strengths each brought to the various projects. The process has given me insight to what I already knew about technology and allowed me to use those strengths, but also allowed me to alter the assignments in a way which allowed me to explore the weaknesses in my understanding and to complete assignments which strengthened them. This portfolio has given me the opportunity to reflect on what I have gained over the years and to so show myself what I have accomplished. It has been good for me to reflect where I have come from and what my possibilities may be. If anyone else can learn from this then that would be a bonus.

ECOMP 5100: Computers, Technology, and Education The activities in this class focused on helping participants gain a basic understanding of computers in education, including productivity tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics. The course introduced the students to educational resources on the Internet, online learning using myLesley, and evaluating educational software for use in classroom instruction.word processingspreadsheetseducational resourcesevaluating educational software

ECOMP7007: Telecommunications: Curriculum in a global Context. In this classes we focused on learning about Web 2.0. Participants developed skills in using the tools of blogs, wikis, and instant messaging as well as other forms of telecommunications to communicate and collaborate with others, access information, and apply their expertise in schools, classrooms and graduate studies. (See “minor works” for more examples of how I came to use these skills).blogs access information

ECOMP5106: Designing Curriculum to Integrate Technology While participating in this class I researched web-sites which could be used to develop a lesson plan as well as a scope and sequence which focused upon national and state educational standards, while also teaching for in-depth understanding using technology. web-sites lesson plan scope and sequence

ECOMP7100: Fundamentals of Computer Structure While gaining experience with regards to upgrading a computer, identifying hardware components, understanding as to how the different parts of a computer work, troubleshooting problems with computers and explore the differences between computers, I developed a dictionary of common computer terms as well as a plan for maintaining a computer lab. troubleshooting problems dictionary

ECOMP 6016: Teaching and Learning with Digital Media While participating in this class I gained a greater understanding of “Media Literacy” and have since made greater effort to incorporate it more into my curriculum. I researched podcasting and created some basic podcasts which need expanding yet for I still feel I have much to learn in this area.Media Literacypodcastingpodcasts

ECOMP 5007: 21 st Century Teaching: Supporting all Learners on Ability Spectrum While examining how technology could be used to assist all learners I developed a series of multimedia presentations designed to help the struggle reader. This was an experiment which was an extension of podcasting. I was attempting to find the most powerful medium to assist my student. Although I like the final product I am not sure the time spent creating the product is worth the final results.multimedia presentations

5003: Technology in the Mathematics Curriculum Although Mathematics Land was a nice place to visit, I would not like to go back. I read the four national standard of math education and wrote a reflection on each, examined using spreadsheets to teach math and its concepts, and incorporated it into a paper on how to use interactive fiction to reinforce one’s understanding of math.reflectionspreadsheetsconceptsinteractive fiction

ECOMP 6009: Web Site Design and HTML: Web Publishing for Educators After examining a rubric on the design and content of web pages, I examined an educational website and wrote a review. Then I spent time examining HTML code and created my own web-site.design contentreviewweb-site

ECOMP 6101: Technology: Impact on Society and Schools Through readings, class activities, and outside assignments, the participates focused on current social and political issues in educational technology and the process of change in educational institutions. As a result of this inquiry I developed a plan for change and wrote a grant proposal seeking support for it.grant proposal

ECOMP 6102: Assessment and Technology The text for this class was Student Involved Assessment FOR Learning by Richard Stiggins. As I read the text, I was challenged to explore the role assessment can take in the process of learning and to design multiple methods to evaluate appropriate uses of technology resources that support both formal and alternative/authentic assessments. The final project was an assessment portfolio which outlined the various assessments explored throughout the course.assessment portfolio

ECOMP 7010: Emerging Technologies While investigating emerging technologies I read various technology magazines and from this created a Slide 280 presentation about the technology. In class we used various handheld devices i.e. Smartphone, GPS, Wii as we examined video games and their roll as educational tools. I wrote an assessment of one. We experimented with various leading edge technologies to determine their usefulness in teaching, learning, and integration into curricula, while matching technologies to students' learning styles. As a final project for this class this portfolio was created.Slide 280assessment
