1 SESAME as International Research Lab by: Salman Matalgah www.sesame.org.jo Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East

Outline:  SESAME in Brief  Update about SESAME  Computing @ SESAME  LinkSCEEM Project  IMAN1: Jordan’s National Supercomputing Center  SESAME and Regional Collaborations  Major Challenges for Scientific Computing

SESAME in Brief : Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East SESAME machine: SESAME accelerator facility consists of three major parts: Microtron, Booster and Storage-ring 1- The Microtron, pre-accelerates electrons, which are produced in an electron source, to an energy of 22 MeV. (ready/ commissioned) 2-The Booster, accelerates the electrons, coming from the Microtron, to the intermediate energy of 800 MeV. (ready/ commissioned) 3-After extraction from the booster the electrons are then injected into the Storage-ring to a final Energy of 2.5GeV. (under development) SESAME Beamlines: 1. Protein crystallography 2. X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) 3. Infrared Spectro-microscopy 4. Powder Diffraction/Material Science 5. Small Angle-resolved X-Ray Scattering and Wide Angle-resolved X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) 6. Soft X-ray Photo-emission and Photo-absorption 7. Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) day-one ( under development )

Update about SESAME:  SESAME’s 800 MeV Booster Synchrotron is Now in Operation) Sept. 2014 (light it ON)  Commissioning with four ‘day-one’ beamlines in late 2016  Good Progress With Construction of the Storage Ring

Computing @ SESAME  SESAME has state-of-the-art infrastructure which designed to enable the Scientific Research in the region.  Computational resources @ SESAME:  IT Infrastructure services and network  Computational resources and High performance Computing (HPC) via: LinkSCEEM/Cy-Tera IMAN1 resources Who we are! Salman Matalgah System & Network Admin ( leader) Mostafa Zoubi Computing System Engineer.

LinkSCEEM Project:  Linking Scientific Computing in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean  SESAME is WP5 leader, Dissemination and Outreach  The Project offered the development of computational science in the region by:  Provide access to HPC resources  Provide training in HPC  Raise awareness for HPC research tools  Bring international expertise into the region  Project objectives: Enable research of particular relevance to the region ( Climate, Cultural heritage, Synchrotron) Integrate regional computational resources Create user support and training programs Build strong links to the European Research Area in accord with the European Neighborhood Policy Project Ends by Feb. 2015

IMAN1  Multiple HPC Clusters with Diversity in CPU Architectures  Open, Public and Available to All Research Communities  Remote, Secure and Easy Access from Anywhere ( public/Private keys)  Providing Extensive User Support (1st+2nd Level ),Training and Outreach Activities to Strengthen the HPC Community in Jordan  Comprehensive Library of Scientific Software Packages  Offer a continues training program on parallel programing and HPC subjects  Establish the first Jordanian HPC Users’ Database, 200+ HPC Users (Jordanians), 25 actual Users on IMAN1 resources (18 off-site)  (Proposal Submission /Request for computing System Time via online submission system - Open Calls for Proposals started on Jan. 2014 )  Establish Strategic and Strong Collaboration Partnerships with regional HPC centers  LINKSCEEM, Cy-Tera Operated & Funded by SESAME & JAEC

SESAME and Regional Collaborations  SESAME is partner in LinkSCEEM project ( WP5 leader)  SESAME is operating iman1 project  SESAME has a strong collaboration with ESRF in the filed of High performance computing (HPC) application and Synchrotron Radiation research. www.esrf.euwww.esrf.eu  CESSAMag: CERN-EC Support for SESAME Magnets  SESAME became a part of PingER project: Internet End-to-end Performance Measurement (IEPM) since March 2011,ttp://www- iepm.slac.stanford.edu/pinger/ttp://www- iepm.slac.stanford.edu/pinger/  SESAME is an observers for CALIPSO (wayforlight European light-sources single entry point, under the User Friendliness dedicated Networking Activity), http://www.calipso.wayforlight.euhttp://www.calipso.wayforlight.eu  Collaboration with ASREN for international connectivity  SESAME to be connected to Research Network - JUNet (Jordanian Universities Network)

 Major Challenges for Scientific Computing and research:  Inadequate regional connectivity, remote access and weak network infrastructure  Regional Weakness on HPC knowledge and usage (high performance computing ), & Very limited regional HPC resources.  Demands popup for Capacity building, knowledge base and to transfer the know-how
