REDUCING ENERGY WASTE Dr Bob Hardwick, Leisure Energy Ltd

2 Cut Your Utility waste first – then look at new supply
Cut Your Utility waste first – then look at new supply. Do not install new supply, and continue wasting it.

3 Cut Your Utility Bills Identify the key areas where energy is lost
Get a thorough energy assessment Look at the common pitfalls of implementing energy saving initiatives. (Graham/JB)

4 Background to Leisure Energy
Joint company formed between The Clarkson Alliance & Lean Energy. 100 leisure refurbishment projects completed in last 10 years. Leisure schemes delivered in operational sites, designed to drive up revenue and participation (Graham/JB)

5 About Lean Energy Over 100 energy saving projects delivered since 2006 to leisure facilities and schools. One Leisure Centre has reduced energy costs by 36%. Work being completed this year will take that to 80% reduction overall. (Bob)

6 Key areas where energy is lost in Pools
(Bob)

7 (Bob) Pool (& Sports Hall) air handling – 24 hours x 365
Pool water pumping – High bay lighting – 16 hours x 365 Heat losses from pool water (Bob)

8 (Bob) Free showers for any user Complex site controls
Backwashing and dilution - high water costs Energy broking, water negotiations (Bob)

25 Common Pitfalls Lessons Learned from Implementing Energy Saving Initiatives
(Bob)

26 Don’t Install new supply ………………………..
install piecemeal technology ……………. ask a seller of damp proof courses if you need a damp proof course.!!! (Bob) Don’t install new supply – boilers, CHP, Voltage Optimising, Renewables, whatever, until you have removed the wasted energy from your core load. No point in purchasing new supply, then continuing to waste it. For that matter, don’t install new gas, biomass, or oil boilers at this time – the work we are doing within the network is making these more and more redundant. Don’t ask a supplier of damp proof courses if you need a damp proof course (or other technology) Don’t install energy saving equipment without knowing its impact on other related systems

27 Don’t Install LED lighting everywhere
Install PV on a swimming pool site … there’s a better system Purchase on cheapest quote Cut out maintenance Turn off your Pool AHU at night (Bob) Don’t install LED lighting everywhere, just because it’s the latest thing. For that matter, don’t install PV on a swimming pool site – there are better ways. Don’t purchase energy saving equipment on the cheapest quote, but based on at least 5 years lowest energy cost to the site. Don’t cut out maintenance to save money. Don’t turn your pool AHU off overnight to save money.

28 Do Get finance you can control Take independent advice (Bob)
Don’t sign up for “free” CHP, Biomass Boilers, Solar panels, etc, if you can possibly avoid it – get finance you control. Don’t take advice from someone paid commission, shared savings, undeclared income, whatever, on where to spend your money. Find someone independent, with specialist pool energy experience. Pools are a very particular energy area, not widely understood.

29 Don’t invent your mistakes alone – join the rest of us.
(Bob)

30 Summary Optimise your energy usage before considering implementing new initiatives Benchmark if possible to see if you are using the right amount of energy. (Graham/ Julian)

31 Summary Seek expert advice from a leisure specialist rather than a dry building consultant Understand the ROI (Graham/ Julian)

32 Any questions? (Bob)
