KSPAN is a diverse coalition working to improve Kentucky’s core capacity to perform injury surveillance and epidemiology, and to implement and evaluate evidence-based injury prevention and control programs.

From 2000 to 2005, Kentucky had the 6th highest rate of unintentional injury deaths in the United States, with the leading causes being motor vehicle crashes, poisoning (including drug overdoses) and falls. 5

Culture is a combination of : Attitudes, Behaviors, Beliefs, Values, Ways of doing things, and Other shared characteristics of a particular group of people. Culture Can: Socialize newcomers. Define influence. Determine values. 6 Culture of Safety When these criteria are consistently and effectively aimed at accident reduction, a positive culture of safety is created

Provide injury data, training, technical assistance, and other forms of support to communities that are interested in achieving Safe Community designation. Communities across Kentucky will form the Kentucky Safe Communities America Network to address the burden of injuries and violence. KSPAN will support communities in their quest to be designated as Safe Communities and in doing the hard work necessary to earn this recognition.

Demonstrate an infrastructure based on partnership and collaborations, governed by a cross- sectional group that is responsible for safety promotion in their community Versus Indicators for LHD IVPP 1.The local health department (LHD) has a designated, functioning program responsible for providing leadership and coordination for injury and violence prevention (IVP) efforts. 11 Indicators established by the WHO Collaborating Center for Community Safety Promotion, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
