2 Before we meet the participle… Let’s review adjectives, nouns, and verbs – A noun is a person, place, or thing, or sometimes an idea Examples of nouns: cat, book, happiness, California – An adjective is a word that describes a noun. Examples: – All of my students are very smart. – The purple and blue hydrangeas are my favorite flowers. – A verb is either an action word, or a state of being word Examples of action verbs: – Jump, scream, run, laugh, dance Examples of state of being verbs: – am, is, are, was, were

3 Introducing the Participle! definition: a verb ending in “- ing”, “ed” or “en” yet used as an adjective; it is placed BEFORE the noun it describes. Examples: Baked brownies (verb: bake) Jumping rabbits (verb: jump) Glazed donuts (verb: glaze) Excited students (verb: excite)

4 Participle Practice Directions: Read the following sentences Write down the participle phrases and underline the participle. Then, draw an arrow to the noun the participle is describing.
